You're both so kind :) And yes, there will be some romance on down the line ;)

    ***

It was early the next day when Ray was driving the cattle down the south side of the river. He heard the clomping of hooves and then heard Clayton call out his name as he rode toward him.

    “Morning, Clayton.”

“Thought I’d come out and help you today.”

“I could sure use the company. I meant to ask you at dinner last night if you wanted to come help today.”

Clayton nodded in understanding. “But you were distracted by something else?”

Ray smiled at him. “Yeah, I guess I was.”

“I noticed Donna looking a lot happier lately—and you, too. You’re different now.”

“Well, I can’t hide anything from you.” They rode together toward the cattle. “I love her, and every time I see her I want to tell her so, to tell her that I want to make the best life I can for her and our child.”

“If you don’t mind my saying so, I think she already knows.”

They stopped for a moment. Ray pushed his hat back and looked off in the distance. “I know. I just don’t always know the right thing to say. I don’t have everything on my mind that I did a few months a go. Something happened and one day I woke up and realized all of that stuff just wasn’t important.”

Clayton pondered it for a moment. “Well, to tell you the truth, none of us knows the right thing to say. We just gotta play it by ear.”

Ray looked at him, a twinkle in his eye. “Is that so?”

Clayton smiled back. “Yep.” They both laughed as they rode away toward the cattle, surrounded by a cloud of dust from the summer’s drought.

    ***

Donna sat by the pool and read over a pamphlet Dr. Danvers had given her. She thought she knew what to expect over the next few months, but she figured it never hurt to read a little more about pregnancy norms. The table umbrella blew in the strong, hot wind and she placed her glass of lemonade on the pamphlet to keep it from blowing out on the range somewhere. She’d been sitting there nearly a half-hour when Pam pulled up in her Porsche. Donna waved and Pam waved back. Pam grabbed her purse and pushed her hair behind her ear as she walked over toward the pool.

    “Hi Pam.”

“Hi Donna. Bobby told me your good news, I hope you don’t mind.”

She smiled. “No, that’s just fine.”

    “Congratulations on the baby.”

    “Thanks.”

“He also told me you and Ray were having problems.”

“We were. It had been coming for a while, and I was hoping it would pass. And now, it seems like it has, but it still worries me. I don’t want him to resent me all the time.”

“I don’t think Bobby ever much liked me working outside the home, either. What is it about the Ewing men that make them think they can corral you like a wild horse?”

    “I wish I knew. I really do.”

“That may be why Miss Ellie’s so tough—she had to be to keep Jock in line.”

    Donna smiled at her.

“And that’s why we have to be just as tough as them—so anytime they get out of line, we can show them who’s boss.”

Donna laughed. “I guess you’re right. I just don’t want to see myself as a divorced single mother.”

“Well, it wasn’t always easy for me—and I worried that Christopher might grow up only seeing his daddy on weekends. But after Bobby and I remarry, I don’t plan to stop working at Barnes Wentworth. We’ll just have to work at our marriage. That means no giving up, and no more letting anyone come between us.”

Donna smiled. “I’d deck any woman that tried to come between me and Ray.”

Pam laughed. “So I’ve been told. Listen, let me get in here and find Miss Ellie so we can go look at wedding dresses. Would you like to come with us?”

Donna closed her pamphlet and stood. “Sure, I’d love that. Might help me get a little perspective on things.” She winked at Pam as they walked in the house together.

    Another excellent update :hats:

Ray and Clayton are really great pals :) Also loved Pam's talk with Donna :) (And I guess that you have fast-forwarded, so that Bobby now has popped the question, since Pam all of a sudden is taking Miss Ellie and Donna shopping for a wedding dress? Or did I miss something?)
Please update soon! I wanna know what happens next with Ray and Donna

Great update. I also really like Ray and Clayton's friendship. :)

Pam's and Donna's bonding was nice too. It seemed like they used to socialize early on but after Pam and Bobby divorced they somehow never did.

Also loved how Donna told Pam she'd deck any woman who'd come after her man and how Clayton told Ray that Donna already knew that he loved her. :)

Naturally I'm also glad Bobby & Pam will get remarried. :)

I do apologize if my alternate timeline is somewhat confusing. I guess I picked and chose elements from the episodes leading up to Bobby's death...without actually killing him :)

    ***

Miss Ellie knocked on the sliding glass door. She was hoping Ray was home so they could discuss his plans for the evening. She’d always been able to talk freely to him; in many ways he was more like her than her other sons. She loved both he and Donna—they were members of her family, and she couldn’t imagine a life without them on Southfork.

“Miss Ellie.” Ray opened the door and welcomed her in. “Would you like anything?”

“No, Ray, I’m fine. I wanted to invite you to come to dinner tonight.”

“Yes, ma’am. I’ll be there.” He smiled at her, and a silence fell between them.

“Donna went with Pam and me to the dress shop today. She really misses you.”

“I know. I miss her, too. We’re both taking the time to sort some things out now.”

“Good. I want to see my grandchild grow up here, and I’d like to see the two of you together again.”

“Yes, ma’am.” She placed her hand on his and he walked her out. He stared through the glass as the ranch hand drove her back to Southfork. The distance to Southfork represented the distance between he and Donna now; two people who shared the same space but needed a way to bridge the canyon between them. The late afternoon sun cast a pall over the ranch, covering it in shadows. Ray smiled to himself, locked the door and went to shower.

    ***

Donna sat in the living room, her fingers absently playing the piano. Dinner would begin soon, but no one else had arrived. Clayton was the first person to come in, and he went to fix himself a drink.

    “Donna?” Clayton broke the silence.

“Hi, Clayton.” She squeezed his hand as he came close to her. “I was beginning to think I was going to eat dinner alone.”

“No, no, Ellie’s invited everyone tonight. Were you just sitting here all by yourself?”

“Yes, but I needed the quiet to do some thinking, about everything that’s gone on lately.”

“I was out on the range with Ray this morning. He smiled when I mentioned your name.”

“I miss him.” She smiled to herself as she thought of him. “But I’ve got a problem.”

“If you wanna tell me about it, I might be able to help you.”

She sighed. “Dave is coming in late this week. He wants me to speak at a function about the oil business.”

    “I see.”

“And it’s the kind of thing I would want Ray to be there for. But I know he’s not comfortable with politics and the oil business, and I’m afraid if I do it and I ask him to come…”

“…you’ll upset the applecart?” He finished her thought.

She nodded as she looked away. “We’ve been communicating so well lately. I’m just afraid that if I do this, he’ll think I’m trying to pull away from him again—and the last thing I want to do is pull away.”

“I think if the two of you talk it out, he’ll see how important it is to you,” he reassured her.

“Thank you.” She stood and hugged him. They both could hear murmurs as the rest of the family started to arrive. They walked toward the main hall and when she saw Ray they both smiled. He took her hand and they walked into the dining room together.

    Beautiful update :10::10::10::10::10:

You know, a simple expression like "yes ma'am" made my day! It just reminds me so much of the early seasons of Dallas ... ... the time period that I love the most! :thank:

Ray walked out to his mailbox the next morning, last night’s dinner still on his mind. He could sense that Donna was still apprehensive but he thought she looked radiant at dinner and later that evening under the stars. During that time alone each night, he felt as though they were rediscovering each other, and he remembered all the reasons he fell in love with her in the first place. He opened the mailbox door, pulling out a few bills and that day’s copy of the Dallas Press. As he walked on the gravel drive back to the house, a story in the lower right corner caught his eye.

    Oil Symposium at City Hall

A group of top legislators from Texas as well as independent oilmen will gather at Dallas City Hall this weekend. The forum will look at the benefits of oil in the Texas community. Senators Dave Culver and Ben Thompson are expected to be in attendance.

Ray knew, instinctively, that this was the kind of thing Donna needed to do—the kind of place where she was needed. He’d selfishly tried to keep her to himself, and in the dream he’d had…well, it wasn’t right to expect her not to do what she was good at. Should he ask her about the meeting, or wait for her to tell him?

He smiled as he walked back inside the house. He’d wait for her.

    ***

    “Ray?”

Donna walked inside the brick house. Ray was on the couch, polishing his boots.

“Donna. Would you like anything?” He stood and kissed her on the cheek.

“No, I’m fine. I came to see if you’d take me to lunch tomorrow.”

He sat his boot down on the table. “Of course. Did you have some place in mind?”
“Yes, the Oil Baron’s Club. Dave is coming in tomorrow, but he doesn’t have time to come all the way out here so I thought I’d meet him in the city. I know he’d like to see you, too.”

“I’d love to take you. And it’d be nice to see Dave too. I’ve probably not been out with you as much as I should’ve been lately, anyway.” He smiled at her. “We should get out of the house more often, go on a few more trips.”

She looked at him quizzically. “Are you sure, Ray?”

“Yeah. It’s not like I have to be on the ranch everyday—there’s plenty of people around who can take care of things. I should be with you, supporting you, more than I am.”

She looked into his blue eyes as she drew close to him. She placed her hand on his cheek as she pulled him into a kiss. The kiss was electric. Ray felt alive again as he felt her soft lips on his. She pulled away and smiled at him, then turned to go.

“I’ll see you later,” she said.

“Okay.” He nodded his head at her. His face felt like it was on fire as she closed the door and walked back toward her car.

He rushed over to the kitchen to get a glass of water. He was putting a few cubes in the glass when the phone rang.

    “Hello?”

    “Raymond? It’s your Aunt Lil.”

“Aunt Lil?” Ray smiled as he thought about her. Their past together brought up many painful memories, but he loved her and she was the only other remnant of his mother’s family—at least until he became a father. “How are you doing?”

“I’m doing fine now, Raymond. I’m going to church every week again and that brings me a lot of peace. I pray for you and Donna, and I pray for Michael. I did want to call and see how you were doing, though.”

“I’m doing well, too, Aunt Lil. Guess what? Donna’s gonna have a baby.”

“Raymond, that’s wonderful. I’m so happy for you both.”

“Thanks. Maybe the two of us could come visit you in Kansas soon.”

“I’d like that very much, Raymond. Listen, I have to go into town but I just wanted to call and check up on you. Give Donna my love.”

“I will Aunt Lil. Take care.”

    “You too, Raymond. Bye.”

“Bye.” He placed the receiver back in its cradle. He went to the sink and filled his glass with water. As he took a drink, he thought about how things worked out sometimes. Even though he’d lost Mickey, the experience had taught him that he could be a good father, and that fate often had things in store he hadn’t bargained for. He’d talk to Donna about Kansas later, but he knew she’d want to go. He finished his water and headed out the door.

Thanks! :) I do like parts of the dream season, but for me, the early years were the best--everything from the first episode until Bobby falls out of his chair. When the next season began and Miss Ellie was missing from the opening credits, it felt like a seismic shift, and things were just never the same...:(

Me too. I think that's a big part of why Miss Ellie and Clayton faded away in the final years of the show--they no longer had that sort of companionship within the family. Heck, they didn't even have Punk and Mavis anymore! :(

    Amazing update :spinning:

I love the little things that you add ... "Ray was on the couch, polishing his boots" ... It just puts me right in the brick house! And it creates that unique Dallas feeling, IMO. :jolly: Oh, and I love that you included Aunt Lil :)

I love how Ray seems to really think of Donna's interests (politics) and how he - by being a little creative - can "score" easy points with her! :yep: Very clever to suggest that they take a trip or two ... ... I'm sure that it won't take long for them to find each other again if they "invest" time together to work on their marriage ... especially away from home!
And I absolutely LOVED that sweet kiss that they shared!:kiss::kiss:

    Please update soon :pals:

I agree Tommie's story is rich in details and it's so nice to read something this well written. :)
Aww Donna and Ray are so cute, loved their kiss and that they will meet for a lunchdate with Dave. It seems like Ray has seen the error of his way. Also a trip to Kansas to see Aunt Lil has potential.

So Tommie do you think Aunt Lil was Margaret Krebbs' sister or Amos Krebbs' sister?
The way you've written it I guess she was Margaret's sister. I don't know if it was ever established on the show...

A pancake has two sides. ... always! ;) And Ray shouldn't have to take responsibility for all the things that went wrong between Donna and him. They both had their "flaws", but if they work on their communication skills and find common goals for their marriage (as well as let each other set individual goals), then there is no reason why they shouldn't be on their way to "cloud # 9".

I think she was definitely his mother's sister. We could argue that subtle hints were dropped within the season; J.R. taking a dig at Krebbses overrunning the ranch, to which Mickey replies that he's a Trotter, and near the season's end when Ray admits his true paternity to Aunt Lil and she seems to want to stop him from impugning his mother's honor by suggesting she had an affair with a married man. "She never said a thing!" I can't imagine, had Margaret been merely her sister-in-law, that Lil would have cared so much. Additionally, Mickey wouldn't have been his cousin in anything but a legal sense had Lil been Amos's sister. Of course you could also make the argument that Lil wouldn't have cared about Amos being old sick and dying had he been only her wayward brother-in-law. DALLAS was vague sometimes, to the point of madness:p Just my opinion. :)

    ***

Donna smiled the whole way back to Southfork. She hadn’t planned to kiss Ray, but it was something they’d done thousands of times before, and in that moment, it just felt right. He seemed like his old self again—sensitive, caring, even a little bit charming. She still loved him, and she didn’t regret kissing him. She just hoped he’d still feel the same after tomorrow and the meeting with Dave. She went upstairs to find something to wear—she wanted to look great tonight at dinner. Maybe this time, Ray would kiss her.

    ***

After dinner Ray and Donna went out to the patio. They held hands as they stared at the stars, surrounded by silence for what seemed like an eternity.

“Here we are again.” Ray gazed at Donna as the stars seemed to sparkle in her eyes.

“Here we are.” She smiled back at him.

“Nice night out here. You’d never know it was 95 degrees in the shade today.”

Donna laughed. “I figured a tough old cowboy like you could take the heat.”

“I can take the heat, alright.” He smiled at her as he put his arm around her waist.

“Ray, I need to tell you something.” She looked at him. “And I’m hoping it won’t change things between the two of us.”
    “Okay,” he said.

She looked away from him and stared off into the night sky. “There’s an important meeting this weekend of politicians and oilmen. Dave is going to ask me to go tomorrow, and I’m going to tell him yes.” Ray nodded at her. “And I want you to be there with me.”

“I will. I’ll go with you. I’ve never been comfortable at those kinds of things, but I want to be with you.” He pulled her close to him again, so he could look into her eyes. “What matters right now is that we support each other—that we put aside our differences and just love each other. Our marriage, your happiness—that’s what’s important to me.”

She smiled at him as a tear rolled down her cheek. “Ray, I’m so sorry about everything that’s gone on this year. Maybe I should’ve been home more. Maybe I should’ve thought more about you.”

He shook his head. “No, it’s my fault. I stay gone all day, working on the ranch, and I shouldn’t expect you to sit around and wait for me. You think about me all the time, you take care of the house, but you need to have your own life, too. You need to share your gifts with the world. I just want us to be together when that baby comes.”

“I’ve been thinking—after the baby is born, I think I’d like to go back to writing again. The oil business is okay but I prefer writing. I can do all my research during the week and then spend the weekends with you.”
“That sounds good to me.” He pulled her into him and kissed her, slowly.

“I want to spend the night with you,” she said, “but I’m not sure I’m ready.”

He nodded. “I understand. I’ll walk you back inside whenever you’d like.”

“Thank you.” She kissed him again and they watched the stars in the night sky until it was time for the two of them to part for the evening.

    Amazing update once again! :spinning::spinning::spinning:
I loved every part of it, especially the kiss that Ray and Donna shared. And also the fact that they're surely moving in the right direction!:kiss::kiss:

After I was done reading, this song (that most of you probably remember) immediately popped up in my mind:

Love is in the air everywhere I look around
Love is in the air every sight and every sound
And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being wise
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when I look in your eyes.

Love is in the air, in the whisper of the tree
Love is in the air in the thunder of the sea
And I don't know if I'm just dreaming
Don't know if I feel safe
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when you call out my name

    Love is in the air
    Love is in the air
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, uh

Love is in the air, in the rising of the sun
Love is in the air, when the day is nearly done
And I don't know if you are illusion
Don't know if I see truth
But you are something that I must believe in
And you are there when I reach out for you

Love is in the air everywhere I look around
Love is in the air every sight and every sound
And I don't know if I'm being foolish
Don't know if I'm being wise
But it's something that I must believe in
And it's there when I look in your eyes

    Love is in the air
    Love is in the air
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, uh

Oh, love is in the air
    Love is in the air
    Oh, oh, oh, oh, uh

Please update your fan fic soon :best:

Cute update. I am glad that Donna & Ray's relationship is on the mend. :)
It's good that they are both realizing what needs to be done to make it work. I also think Donna going back to her writing is a good idea as she always seemed a bit out of her area when she was working with the oil business.

Then as for Aunt Lil, a reason I brought it up was because I always thought she was Amos Krebbs sister. The main reason for it, why would she care about Amos if he was just Margaret's drunk ex?
Because she thought he was Raymond's father?
Also if she was not Amos sister her last name would not have been Krebbs before she got married.
But then again I could be wrong, it's possible she was actually Margaret's sister and if she was that would mean that Ray and Mickey were really cousins.

Ray stared at himself in the mirror while he tried to adjust his tie. For whatever reason he was nervous today, and he just couldn’t get the tie to look right. He’d have to get Donna to help him after he picked her up. He locked the door behind him and headed for his truck.

“How do I look, Miss Ellie?” She and Donna were sitting at the kitchen table together.

“Oh, you look beautiful as always. You’ll tell Dave I send my best regards, right?”

“I will, ma’am.” She looked out the window. “I think I see Ray coming now. Wish me luck!”

“You don’t need it, but I’ll give it to you anyway.”

“Thank you.” They hugged and Donna headed out the door to meet Ray.

He smiled when he saw her. “You look beautiful,” he said as he stepped out of his truck.

“So do you,” she said. He loved her smile, and in the sun her golden hair shimmered.

“Would you mind helping me with this?” He held out his tie.

“Sure thing.” She walked up to him and put the tie around his neck. She smiled as she adjusted his tie and straightened the knot. Miss Ellie smiled at the both of them as she watched from the door before going upstairs.

“There—you look perfect.” She kissed him. “Thank you for coming with me today.”

“Well, I wouldn’t miss it.” He put his hand on the small of her back. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. Aunt Lil called the other day.”

    “Oh, how is she?”

“She’s doing well. I told her after we got things settled we might come for a visit.”

“I’d like that. Maybe in the next month or so.” He opened the truck door for her. “Thank you.”

He closed the door behind her. “I think she’ll really like seeing us.”

“I hope she needs you to mow her lawn again.”

Ray laughed. “I’ll just bet you do.”

They arrived at the Oil Baron’s Club and Dora Mae took them to their table. Dave was already there.

“Ray, Donna, always nice to see you.” Dave shook Ray’s hand and kissed Donna on the cheek. “Pregnancy agrees with you.”

“Well, thank you.” They all sat down. “I’ve already talked with Ray about tomorrow so you can speak openly about it.”

“Great. Well, everyone is looking forward to seeing you and hearing you speak.”
She smiled. She found Ray’s hand under the table and held it in hers. “This may be my last oil meeting for quite some time.”

“I understand. You’ll be wanting to spend more time around home from now on.”

“Yes. I’ve asked Ray to come with me, too.”

Ray smiled. “And I’ll come. I know how much it means to you.”

“Wonderful! It should be a big event. Now I’ll have to buy you both lunch.”

“That’s not necessary, Dave.” Ray protested.

“Nonsense! You’re family. Now where are those menus?”

Donna laughed. “You should always take the menus here when they first offer them.”

That was my interpretation, anyway. He had returned to town (I think Amos, like Digger, drifted from place to place until he came home to die) and Aunt Lil just assumed that Ray was his only surviving relative, and knew that he had done well for himself (but not how well, exactly) and looked to him for help with Amos's medical costs.

Sweet update ... I loved it! :jolly:

It's wonderful that Ray and Donna already feel so comfortable in each other's company that they don't feel awkward giving the other a kiss, if that's what they feel like doing!:kiss::kiss:

All the little things that you add that just "fits" the characters so perfectly ... Ray not being best friends with a neck tie ;) ... ... Donna teasing Ray about mowing Aunt Lil's lawn ;) ... ... I love it! :wink@

    I can't wait for the next update! :10: :10: :10:
    Please update soon :best:

Aww I love it how they held hands under the table and how Miss Ellie was watching them when Donna helped Ray correct his tie. So cute. :)
I'll look forward to their visit with Aunt Lil too.

This is good so far. It is quite amusing how being married to Jenna turned out to be a nightmare for Ray! Lol! The dream season messed with my head about Donna's pregnancy, so I'm hoping that the child will still be Margaret. Since Ray is grateful to have a second chance, I'm sure he will take Donna's news well!
