If they were just gonna do exactly the same, then there would be no reason to produce a new show. Just air reruns of the original. So the new Dynasty has to be different in some defining ways.

What things would you do different? What should be changed?

Admittedly I'm not the die-hard fan that others on here are. My thoughts are more general, not detailed plot points or anything.

I assume the producers plan to play this totally "straight"--that is, playing it as real people in real lives without winks and nods to the audience or any overtly satirical behavior. I hope they won't go in with this attitude of "Oh, here's something we can change just for the hell of it". I'd only change the things that help tighten up the plotlines or update them for modern times. Frankly I don't think it's imperative they make Krystle into Cristal, but since that seems to be a selling point for the project, I guess we're stuck with it.

Obviously a new cast means certain things will automatically be different. Producers can't help but tailor aspects of characters to the strengths of the actors--and in some cases, change the character outline after casting someone. For instance, if they cast an American to play Alexis, they may skip the British accent. This would likely mean Amanda's accent would be optional, as well. It all hinges on who they cast, of course.

They need to decide if this will be a soap about business plotlines complicated by family ties, or a soap about family relationships complicated by business struggles. Does that make sense? They need to focus in one area or the other, and not try to have it both ways because all that talk about oil leases and stockholder meetings made my eyes glaze over.

It seems utterly bizarre to me that Krystle being Cristal was a selling point. I mean my mind reels... how is that a selling point? How did networks think that was a good idea? A name change?

I'd have the business part be mostly about the family. Struggling to be kind and respectful at the office (which could otherwise cause the company damage) and fighting about who inherits what. It's often sensitive when new kids are born - how it changes inheritances (often splitting it up into one more piece, making some family members annoyed).

Daytime soaps often handle business stories quite well, making them much more about relationships than just business. Pitting siblings against each other, parents vs children, step-parents vs step-children and, of course, the problems that arise when no prenuptial agreement has been written, making the ex get lots of stock.

It's reason enough for me, but if they change something that's fine with me, although I can't even begin to think of alternative family members.
But, ideally, improve the things that weren't good enough, and exclude the things that sucked.
Dynasty's business storylines were laughable and it was often hard to picture Blake as a successful business man (post season 1), so I would definitely work on that.

Yes, bring in Dominique but don't make her only there to Blake's personal bank manager. Give us a Peter de Vilbis but make him a suave handsome appealing conman, not a weedy uncomfortable looking reptilian. Give us a Mark Jennings but cast someone who looks like he could have been married to our heroine, and hire an actor who can, well.. act.

The decision to do a reboot was the right one. There's a great story there, if it can be rescued from the popular perception that Dynasty was only about glamour, catfights and creaky dialogue. If they get the tone right (brooding) and play it with a straight bat from the first outing, then it may have a chance.

I just really don't think that The CW is the place to do that or that Josh Schwartz is up to it.

No, the selling point is that Krystle/Cristal will be Hispanic, a nod to an effort to make the reboot more ( I hate this word) diverse. The name change is only a reflection of the ethnicity change.

I don't understand that either unless they are really going to go into her back story. Something the originals how didn't do. I don't see how changing the ethnicity of the character has any real bearing on the story.

    - I can see it....
When Fallon thinks Cristal isn´t good enough for her daddy because she is hispanic there´s conflict....

They can chang things that all went wrong.
    - let Steven be gay and happy (sometimes)
    - when introduce someone (like Dominique) give her something to do
    - don´t waste characters (like Caress)
    - don´t make bad ones good and borring (like Ben)
    - when you shoot the whole family down there has to be more blood and dead bodies

When they did a reboot of Battlestar Galactica in 2003 they turned two male characters into female characters so I guess anything is possible on reboots. :D
Since the Dynasty reboot is on The CW, I kind of expect that Blake is not going to be older than 45. Cristal is probably going to be 25 and Fallon 20?
I think a lot of Dynasty fans will be disappointed, many fans of the original Battlestar were furious and refused to watch the new show.

Ew, I hope not! I mean, I can live with Blake being in his 40s, but Cristal a mere 5 years older than her own stepdaughter? I've seen that done before on Gossip Girl (well, Serena never married the guy but the involvement was supposed to be serious), and it was just *bleah*. Now, if Cristal were 35, then I could handle it. At least then it would be realistic for her to be a mother figure to her stepchildren - particularly Steven. I always loved the mother/son thing they had going on in the original show, and I see no reason not to continue that in the new show. :)

Oh yes, and another reason for Cristal being in her 30s: Alexis would have to be in her 40s, and her catfighting with a 25-year-old all the time would just be awkward and laughable. Besides, if the new show includes Sammy Jo, Kirby and Amanda, then there'll be no shortage of youthful girls to draw in younger audiences.

Howshould they handle the Fallon/Amanda relationship differently from the original show, Fallon talked about Kristina on the Colby's but never Amanda, and then we had that one scene in season seven. How should Cristal relate to the two girls?

They actually SHARE A SCENE WITH ONE ANOTHER? ...oh no wait, there was that *one* scene in the original series... only both characters were being played by the recasts... ugh, it gets more bizarre the more I think about it.

Heh, but yeah, I say build up a strong relationship between the two - but by 'strong' I don't mean have them be on good terms. Fallon is Daddy's Jealous Little Princess and often views other women as her rival. And now here comes this Surprise Little Sister who gets to lay claim to the title that has only ever belonged to Fallon: Blake Carrington's daughter. That would drive her *crazy*.

Plus, there should also be a Fallon/Steven vs Adam/Amanda thing going on as well, with the older, dark-haired siblings being the ambitious career-driven sharks with the younger, blonde siblings acting as their respective sibling's moral compass.

Have her reach out to them. Fallon rejects her because of the whole "gold digger stole my father" thing, whereas Amanda gets along just fine with Cristal, which causes not only more tension with Fallon, but also with Alexis ("How DARE you try to move in on my daughter, you Mexican bimbo!").

Sammy Jo is Cristal's young cute blonde gay nephew who manipulates Steven, breaks his heart and causes all kinds of trouble.

If Cristal is Hispanic, then Sammy Jo would have to be half-Hispanic in order to be blonde... or he/she could just dye his/her hair. ;) lol
