The CW today officially ordered production of the DYNASTY reboot pilot.

Back on October 1, when the project was originally announced, The CW ordered the script, but it wasn't till today that the filming of the pilot got the official green light. This means we will be hearing the first casting news in the coming days and weeks - I assume the production will take place in March.

This does not mean the pilot will definitely go to series, the CW will make a decision after viewing the pilot in April.

There's a chance we may not even see the pilot isn't there?

Yes. Based on the Pilot, they'll decide if they want to order more episodes and start airing the show. Considering the people behind it, though, there's a good chance it'll get an initial order...

In years past, they would produce a full-blown, "this is what the show will be like" pilot with proper sets, location work, etc. and a generous budget.
It was, in essence, the first episode of the series. In modern penny-pinching, they often produce a "mini-sode" (reduced length, using sets borrowed from other productions, no special effects) just to give studio execs a taste of what they want to produce once they are given the episode order. I have no idea if the CW would agree to give them a large budget for a proper pilot to be produced, or if the producers would have to foot the bill themselves...but since the lavish excess is an integral part of the show's identity, I think it would work against the producers to do a mini-sode 'treatment'.

One of the by-products of that era was that in the summers of the 1970s and 1980s, the networks would often air unsold pilots as "specials" to fill up the primetime schedule. We would get the chance to view what 'could have been', and often I liked the rejects better than what ended up going to series. With the advent of mini-sodes and half-assed "treatments" being used to sell a series to networks, we don't see as much of the unsold material simply because it isn't really a fully-produced bit of TV suitable to be aired. If this Dynasty reboot is done as a "partial" pilot and fails to get picked up, we may never see what the network got to see.

Which ones have you seen? Any soap pilots perhaps? Have you seen the Dynasty episode with George Peppard?

The unsold pilots that aired were potential series that the network (for whatever reason) decided not to pursue. Most were forgettable, anyway, even at the time (which was the 1970s and 1980s, which was a fairly long time ago). One that I recall involved Kate Jackson playing the sheriff in a small Northwestern town, a crime drama. A little while later she was starring in Scarecrow and Mrs. King, but that small-town sheriff role stuck in my head because it seemed like a (more) perfect role for her. I was such a fan that I would have watched her in anything, but Scarecrow and Mrs. King was actually a damn good show.

They didn't (in my memory) ever show first-draft pilots, the sort of pilots where the series was bought, but they re-tooled the pilot with recasts, etc. because (I'm guessing) they didn't want to have people compare the two. The first versions typically only surface after a show becomes a success and people are curious about the show's origins. Even then, you have to get such "scrapped" material as a DVD extra or something (such as the many changing faces of the cast of All In The Family during the pilot phase).

Very recently, I've come to have a little bit of renewed hope for a new Dynasty, and that's thanks to the CW's "Riverdale" series. Granted, I haven't seen that particular show myself yet (I admit it, I haven't seen it because I'm actually afraid to ), but I did see a review of it, and it looks like "Riverdale" could become a total "guilty pleasure" type of TV show. Not only that, but the casting for it looked pretty good - *especially* where Veronica is concerned. I only saw a couple clips of the actress, but in one particular shot she had an expression her face that was *so* "Veronica".

If they can find an actress to play Veronica Lodge, I have hope they can find someone to play Fallon Carrington. That's all I'm saying. :D

The articles indicate The CW wants a primetime soap on their schedule and DYNASTY is their biggest intellectual property (insert a joke here). On the other hand, The CW programs only 10 hours of primetime per week and has very little space for new shows.

Last spring, for example, they picked up only 4 new dramas for the 2016/2017 season (incl. CBS' scrap Supergirl). Now imagine they are currently developing 22 dramas for next season most of which will not get picked up:

So, The CW will have to like nuDYNASTY a lot to give it a spot on their schedule. Too many dramas, too little space.

Im happy that the showrunner wont be that wretched duo that did Gossip Girls...and that they are getting input from the creators of Dynasty as well as using the writer of Revenge. Not dreading it as badly...now they need to cast this thing with people that can act and not the typical CW look.

If they pick it up, Ill forgive them for cancelling Ringer...a primetime film noir soap some years ago

Smells like not enough budget to make a pilot good enough to make them want to pick it up.
