Every time I re-watch the True Hollywood Story devoted to "Dallas", I canīt help noticing how strange Howard Lakinīs sentence sounds: "Dallas" was about Leonard Katzmanīs inner life."

So what is he supposed to mean? That he based the characters on his own family? And if so, what part would represent his own personality?

Despite my dislike of the five latter seasons of "Dallas", I think that Lenny wrote and directed some of the best storylines ever, along with David Paulsen (especially seasons 5 & 6, classic numbering, and maybe 10). All the actors have repeated to death that he was the soul of the show and Capice was the business man, and much colder than him. But I have the feeling that, like in so many other cases, the balance between two different if not opposite persons, may produce a masterpiece (and I mean a real one, not what Cidre considers as such).

J.R.: The eldest son, always looking for Daddyīs approval, jealous of his brothers, feeling so superior to boozy Gary, fearing the power that the Bobby-Pam marriage could steal from him, bashing every man who looks at his Mama (especially Clayton), having a reputation that precedes him (true or untrue: was J.R. actually a great business man?), violating national and international laws for his own sake, using his only son as a pawn to make his wife dance at his tune, pushing honest men (Cliff, Edgar) over the edge, humiliating not only Sue Ellen, but also most of her other women: he manipulated Cally psychologically to get rid of her, almost sent Kristin to jail for prostitution, used and abused Marilee through her "obsexion", blackmailed Holly and Laurel into sleeping with him, treated Mandy as dirt (she wasnīt, or was she?) for posing for Valentine, and even used violence against poor Kimberly Cryder. So was J.R. just a mysoginist, after all?

Bobby: Once a playboy and used to shady deals, by marrying Pam he became a knight in white armour. Or maybe it was Miss Ellieīs presence what made him behave when living at Southfork? Iīd rather think it was love, pure love, not the innocent and corny love to that "girl next ranch" (aka Jenna), but love to the woman he wanted to spend his life with. Bobby was an example to follow for everybody else in Southfork and probably in Dallas too. His relationship with Pam was envied by Sue Ellen, Lucy owed him her keeping away from drugs, Jock was wise enough to know that it was him who saved the family company from bankruptcy so many times, and he was Ellieīs confident until Clayton showed up. No need to say that he also was the right father for Chris...if we didnīt know what kind of jerk he would become 30 years later. So was Bobbyīs only fault his ability to love and forgive everything out of love?

Gary: The angry boy the first season tells us he is, is not shown to us until he goes off the wagon wildly and pushed by that greedy blondie of his, Abby Cunning-ham, on the fourth season of "Knots". Until then, even when he drinks again in the first season finale, he looks frail, pathetic, weak and uncapable to control himself, therefore he needs someone so dependant as Valene by his side. J.R.īs "crossovers" are like little stings to him, as a way to make Gary wonder if he really has what every real Ewing has. But thereīs more than meets the eye with Gary: he doesnīt think heīs worth too much, thatīs why he married Abby instead of Val, because he thinks thatīs the "kind" of wife he deserves, and this thought prevails and grows as the show advances. Otherwise, there would have been no Cathys or Jills in his life. Abby gets the worst out of him, and he becomes more and more like his brother Bobby once the Abster is out of sight. Too bad this also means that the character also becomes a bit dull and bland by then. Growing up is becoming dull, at least for the good guys. And this is confirmed by Cidreīs vision of him, at least she has been faithful to Garyīs evolution.

Ray: The essence of a cowboy, the combination of the best of two worlds (illegitimate son of a wildcatter but "adoptive" son of a ranching, land-loving woman). He used to go "out" with J.R. (who, letīs remember, was his boss then) but seemed to change for good after that first episode, when J.R. almost ruins his ex-girlfriend Pamīs reputation. After that, Ray only gets more of a goody-goody every day. When he meets Donna, he is capable to make this intelligent, loyal, principled woman, cheat her much older husband. We wonīt see this side of Donna again, thatīs because her love to Ray was a once-in-a-life feeling. Ray is strong enough to push away Lucy, overcome his heartbreak after the Garnet McGee affaire, begin a new life after Jockīs death partly thanks to Donna, and play the father figure with Mickey. Guilt and pride are his main faults: he almost seems to be as much a son of Ellie and Jockīs as the other boys. Separating from Donna was a twist that almost ruins the Ray character, and making him marry Jenna was the last straw: now Ray was plain stupid, not only for choosing such a skank, but also for not marrying out of love, but for adding the missing pieces in the puzzle he considers that life is: family. No matter how simple-minded or regressive that may sound: love is not enough, he wants family to keep up appearances. If he makes mistakes, he will feel guilty again, as he did with that psycho woman.

What do you think? Katzman has several sons alive (he lost his daughter Sherril Lynn, aka Jackie, too soon) and I would love to listen to what they have to say about the show and his fatherīs ideas and projections.

Happy Mothers Day to all!

Dallas was not really a show spotlighting the strengths of motherhood was it...
Was there a decent mother in the bunch?

Sue Ellen: The worst! She and J.R. loved John Ross for sure, but mainly he was a pawn in their battle for most of his childhood. Sue Ellen could not even stand to touch him for his first few months, which if know anything about kittens, means he learned early his needs would not be met without a big fuss. Between her drinking, affairs (including his camp counsellor), John Ross learned early that his mother could not be trusted to meet his need and this mistrust in women would follow him into adulthood.

Valene: Regardless of J.R.'s threats, Valene's own issues got in the way of her standing for, and actually being a mother to Lucy.

Patricia: The lessons she taught her daughters caused them grief, pain and in one case death.

Ellie: A good grandmother yes, but as a mother, nah. I know some may think differently, but her favoritism left one brother bitter, caused one brother to flee the smothering and Bobby, well, he was sort of left a bit cold. Because of her generation and values, Ellie let Jock do most of the raising of the boys and although she stepped up to the plate after his death, the damage to her sons, two in particular, was already firmly seeded.

Rebecca: Abandoned her children for reasons I still am not sure were every truly explained to justify her actions. On Dallas, fear (Valene/Rebecca) seems a justification to screw over one's offspring. The child she did not leave turned into a murdering loonatic.

Pamela: Although she left Christopher, her reasons at least to her, put his best interests first. From all we saw, as a mother, she was stong and loving. To me, her big mistake was taking Christopher from Southfork after Rebecca's death. Although her reasons were strong, they were also selfish not taking into account the fall out for Christopher and Bobby.

Besides Pamela, the only other positive examples of mothers appear to be oddly Vanessa, Cally and Aunt Lil

Any others?

I like him with Sue Ellen in the beggining and i felt bad when we all were led to believe he was John Ross dad but it turned out he wasnt . I also felt bad for him when the Ewings ruined his political career. The point to me when i started to dislike him is after he tried to commit suicide. It was so pathetic how he rode Rebecca coat tail. I also didnt like the way he treated Afton. Granted he became rich and powerful he became very unlikable. JR may have been a as$^%le but at least he was a real villain and a real business man. Cliff needed everyone help and he always cried. In the new Dallas he is a good villain ill admit even though he is so over the top. Nothing against Ken Kerecheval he is a good actor just hated the way they wrote him after season 5. In that scene after Rebecca died when Katherine told him off she was 100 percent right. i was glad Katherine went after him.:D
