I know that Dallas was set in Dallas, hence the name "Dallas", lol, but would it have been a good series in another town.
I mean of course you would have to change some of the storylines around, like cattle ranching, etc, but would Dallas still have the same glitz and glamour if it had been set in another town?

NO WAY! Texas is famous for it's massive lands, it's strength, it's pride and let's not forget for its land so rich in oil. The story behind Dallas was it's power in oil and it's huge strength of the Ewing clan. You would have to pick another state that represents all that.
I think Dallas was a hit because mostly it represented all those things. Even though it was a little glitzy, Dallas still had a country feel to it. A night time soap should have that feeling. When someone thinks of Dallas, they think of the huge state of Texas and all that it represents. Texas could be viewed as it's own country. There is no other state quite like Texas. I lived there for a while and it just seemed that way to me. Any other town or state just couldn't match up to Texas. I also lived in Germany for six years and everyone I met thought that Dallas was a powerful t.v. show and were amazed at how big the great state of Texas really was. They also put Dallas, cowboys, oil, rich folk all together and were very fascinated by it all. When Dallas was first created, the city, state, the land rich in oil, the rich oil barons, and the Ewing family idea was a perfect match!
JR would have to wear flannel and marry Courtney Love :-).

Jock,
I don't think I would have watched DALLAS if JR had married Courtney Love. Imagine how dysfunctional that would've been haha LOL

In an interview years ago, Larry joked that the second choice for the city was "Boise" (Idaho), and how that just didn't have the same sound as "Dallas".

Cliff:"You used to plot revenge against the Ewings"
Pam:"I think marrying one is the best revenge"
There would be more scenes in the rain.....

Might as well have put it in Bangor Maine then.... or Tulsa Oklahoma, or Grand Rapids, or Detroit....it was DALLAS

The fishing business doesn't seem as exciting as the oil business. Can't imagine JR getting excited about his big trout deal.

Wasn't the show originally supposed to take place in St. Louis? Obviously the series wouldn't have been named Dallas, but this was VERY early on in developement. I could be way off.

Sounds strange, but there are no oil fields in Denver, never stopped Aaron Spelling though http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
You're mistaken...........there are plenty of oilfields right near Denver........*S*.
I have worked on wells right in Commerce City.......which is in Denver proper.
You ever hear of the Denver-Julesberg Basin.......??

Yes, Denver is something of an oil town.
For that matter, there is no oil in Dallas County.

"Midland" doesn't have the same ring to it as "Dallas." http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Right, there are no oil fields IN Denver, as there are no oil fields IN Dallas city limits.
The point being people think of oil and Texas, they think of Colorado and snow, especially after watching "Dynasty's" opening http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
They think of Colorado and Gold...........and...........their is oil in and around Denver. Canyon City had one of the earliest wells ever dug.
You can't go in the Brown Palace or drive by Molly Browns House and not think of Gold
