i heard that the soap was very successful, does anyone know why they cancelled it and replaced it with the low rated soap Passion?

NBC canned AW due to low ratings. At the time, NBC had AW, Days of our Lives, and Sunset Beach. They had a new soap in the works and one soap had to get the ax. Aaron Spelling apparently paid (in some sort of way, I can't remember the details) for SB to stay on the air through December of 1999. AW ended in June, SB contiuned and Passions debuted in July. NBC pulled the plug on SB in December (it's plan since summer, apparently) and now only has Days and Passions in it's line up.

I really think that Sunset Beach's ratings were lower than AW. AW writing got really bad at the end and they started killing off many many fan favorites. Too bad though b/c they had some great characters & actors.

FYI -- SoapNet will be airing AW starting July 1. They'll be airing episodes starting from 1987 until it went off the air. I'm excited b/c I never saw the final episode & was really upset at what they did to the characters of Jake & Vicki when they moved over to ATWT.

Another World had low ratings was over ten years by 1999. The creator of Passions is the writer who made people watch Days of our LIves again in the mid 1990's.

So NBC used him to save their daytime line up.
I know some Another World fans say that Passions have lower ratings than Another World, but you have to remember every soap, I DO MEAN EVERY SOAP lose ratings every year. Y&R can be number 1 with a 5.0 now while 10 years ago a 5.0 it would have place it a Number like 6 or 7.

It isn't the houehold rating that matters anymore, it's the demographic! "Passions" does quite well in certain demographics while a show like, Guiding Light, for example, doesn't do as well in the demographic.

from the clips I see on soapnet, it's pretty obvious that the show was quite juicy.

I'll watch the first week or so, but I'm not really interested in it. Why get another old daytime soap? Bad move I say. I was hoping they'd get Peyton Place or Dallas. Something good atleast. Well, I'll have to wait till I see it I guess.

I actually changed my mind after seeing all the promos. it was a nostalgical experience for me, all these clips from the 80's makes me remember of the good old days of daytime soap when everything was interesting.

Seeing the clips, I can't help to think of Santa Barbara and Y and R in its heyday where writers were very creative.

Although AW is another soap, the style is very similar and very 80ish with the clothes, glamour ect.

The soap may have sucked in the late 90's but looks like it was a good in the late 80's.

I assume because of low ratings and bad storylines. Currently watch "Days of our Lives" and if they don't get with it, they'll be next. NBC has yet to renew their contract, which expires in spring of 2004.

WRONG, they were renewed for 5 years. http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

For weeks - possibly months - the fate of Days of Our Lives was said to be hanging in the balance as NBC executive and Corday Productions, the owners of Days of Our Lives, engaged in talks about the show's future. Days of Our Lives was up for renewal and talks between the two sides reportedly did not go well.

In fact, even the show's performers didn't know if Days of Our Lives would be canceled, if the show would move to another network or if they'd even have jobs.

On May 8th, Days of Our Lives' co-executive producer Steve Wyman announced over the studio's public address system that the show was safe; it had been picked up by NBC for another five years.

Now that the two sides have reached an agreement - one that will keep Days of Our Lives on NBC until March 2008 - chatter is beginning to emerge about the concessions made by both sides during the bargaining.
James E. Reilly will return to head writing duties at DAYS. If that name rings a bell, there are two possible explanations for it. Reilly served as DAYS' head writer from 1993 to 1997. During that time he penned the now-infamous tale of Marlena's possession by the devil. That storyline may have been a foreshadowing for Reilly's next endeavor: creating the supernatural-themed soap opera, Passions, for which he has served as head writer since its debut in 1999.

"Days Of Our Lives has entertained millions of loyal fans for over 37 years, all of them on NBC. We're delighted to continue the partnership with Corday Productions and Sony Pictures Television for another five years. We're also excited for James Reilly to return as head writer on DAYS," said Sheraton Kalouria, Senior Vice President, Daytime Programs, NBC Entertainment.

Reilly's (re)ascension to the DAYS head writing throne means that Dena Higley has been ousted after less than a year as the show's head scribe. Higley was named head writer of Days of Our Lives earlier this year after having presented executive producer Ken Corday with an outline of her vision for the show for the next twelve months.

GLAD TO HEAR IT !!!!! Been working so much lately, don't get to hear much news, tape Days usually. Watch no matter what, even though some stories are silly, hoping for the someday return of Stefano http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I can't wait until they start airing Another World next week! I am a big fan of Ryan's Hope and I hope that AW will be as good as it. SoapNet needs to add more cancelled daytime soaps such as Capitol, The Edge of Night, and Santa Barbara, along with primetime soaps Dallas and Peyton Place. Anything would be better than their endless airings of the current ABC soaps, SoapTalk, and SoapCenter, especially on the weekends.

Don't get Soap Net, but was wondering does this channel play the closing theme songs on the full screen without talking over them ?

So many channels now scrunch the closing credits to 1/3 of the screen and has coming attractions on most of the screen. You can also not hear any of the theme when they do this, very annoying to a theme song lover !!!!!

No, unfortunately they talk over the credits. Thankfully, they don't use split screen credits.

I hate when networks do that! Sci Fi is especially bad with this. I watch Dark Shadows on the channel and they squish the credits up really badly to the point where you have to squint to make out large words and, unlike other channels, you can't even faintly here the closing theme.

No offense meant, but from the promos on SN, AW looks like a big joke, IMO...

I too think that Ray! http://www.soapchat.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I'm still going to watch the first episode though.

This Rachel person is very scary to me. Does anyone know anything about her? Is she a recast? She just looks very scary to me...Freddy Kruger move over..

Rachel (in the place where SoapNet is picking up) is played by Victoria Wyndham. Victoria Wyndham was the third person to play Rachel. She played Rachel from 1972 until the show's cancelation in 1999. The role had been previously played by Robin Strasser (1967-1971, 1972) and Margie Impert (1971-1972). The show will be picking up with the 1987 episodes, so she will have been in the role for 15 years when it begins airing. 1987 is the year Anne Heche joined the cast, so that may have something with them picking up at that point.

There's a great Another World site at http://www.igs.net/~awhp/awhp.html , if anyone is interested in finding out more about the show.
