Various options for pilot episode:
1. John Ross returns to Southfork with new bride. Has no interest in Ewing Oil. Christopher has been working at Ewing Oil and carved a name for himself. Story will focus on JR getting his son to take control. Final scene in pilot is John Ross taking the helm as power rises to his head and a demon is born.
2........
Wait, John Ross taking control of Ewing Oil in just one episode? I know everything is so fast paced these days but shouldn't that be a season-long arc? Plus, I don't want John Ross to be a copy of J.R. lol

Alternatively
Scerio 2 - Christopher is one messed up litle bastard. The complete opposite to his father, vengeful, slightlly unnerveing. Even JR is shocked :D
John Ross is more his mothers son. JR is dissapointed, but John Ross is still cunning, very ambitious, JR sets the scene to decide who takes the power seat at Ewing Oil setting John Ross and Christopher aganist eachother, ripping the family apart. Lots of teary Sue Ellen scenes. :D
Whose side with Lucas take?
Where are the girls in this family. If it were me I would make Cally's child into a girl, we never really knew 100% it was a son. But for the sake of creative license it needs a female in the Ewing clan.

Making Chris the new JR would be fantastic:
If you look at what made JR tick in the begining, it was him desperate for the approval and love of his Mother (Gary was her favorite) and Father (Bobby was his), so it makes sense that Christopher would end up being the more messed up of the Ewing cousins. Whereas John Ross has had the love and support of both of his parents most of his life, Christopher had his birth mother give him up (his viewpoint, not one against adoptions), and then his adopted mom abandonned him as a child. Add to that the ever-changing parade of woman his father dated, and one dead step-mother and you have the perfect receipe for a villian to even surpass JR.

I completely forgot Cally and JR had a child. I wonder if the new writers know this and if they'd mention that child. There are so many offspring all over the place that it could get confusing lol. You run that risk by continuing any soap though. Knots Landing would probably be easier to jump in since it wasn't just one family so you can omit whomever you'd like. With Dallas it's one big complicated web.
I wonder, do people like Ray no longer matter? He was always Jock's son and has offspring the age of John Ross and Christopher. Then you have Cliff and Afton's child. JR and Cally's child. Where does Lucy lie in all of this? Not to mention Gary!
I'm not criticizing the new series, but it'll be interesting to see how they make sense of it. I hope they don't go the obvious route by just focusing on JR and Bobby and surprise us. Since Lucy is still fairly young they can recast the role and utilize her better than the original series ever did. She wasn't very developed so the sky is the limit there. James Beaumont is another one who could be recast and utilized in the new series. With John Ross, James and Cally's baby, you have a chance to create the type of rivalry JR had with Ray. It can be confusing, but it also makes things messy and in a family drama thats good!

I wonder if James will be involved, or will he be quietly forgotten? Yes, it's tempting to write him out of history given how late into the show he turned up and how awful Sasha Mitchell was in the role but with a decent recast, he could be an interesting character. The eldest son, the bastard son, returning after years in the wilderness to claim his birthright. Could stir up a lot of tension.
Or JR and Cally's kid could fulfil a similar role. John Ross and Christopher have been running the family business for years and then this young usurper shows up, staking his claim.
Either way, the family tension doesn't have to be limited to the obvious idea of John Ross vs. Christopher.

This is my point. It is a confused mess which is fine in an ongoing seriel but to try and explain all of this would become a mess.
Thats why I don't want to see them all in the pilot. They can all wait. For it to work they need to really focus on a few characters and their wives. John Ross and Christoper could be married etc etc.
See if they brought in Cally's child that would be good. Cally could be dead and the daughter/son could have a very difficult relationship with Sue Ellen. There are lots of options and directions to take this in.

1st of all is this 100% going to happen? also did you forget that JR had another kid? even though it i believe played by Sasha Mitchell. i forget the characters name mind you. they could use him, but let me also add they could recast the part so that Sasha Mitchell doesn't play the role again. if they don't go with Chris being the New JR.

John Ross and Christopher are now semi-incestuous lovers. And can't get along.

One of the things I hope they address, is to say that James is living happily with his family elsewhere in the country. It also is reasonable to assume he and JR are possibly estranged ever since he left and he decided to focus on John Ross as his legitimate and main heir, but he should at least be acknowledged. It also opens up the door for little Jimmy to be a character one day, not needed per se but a possibility nonetheless. JR would not entirely forget his oldest son and it makes sense he would at least think of him from time to time.

I haven't watched later seasons yet, who are you referring to as James' family?

Whose side with Lucas take?Lucas (as Bobby's natural but estranged son) versus Christopher (as Bobby's adopted but Southfork-raised son) would be a very interesting battle.

Good idea! It would be interesting to see Christopher more like JR than John Ross because it will definately create tension!
