Double dose of Doctor Who in 2011

Doctor Who fans are in for a treat with two series of the hit show set to screen in 2011.

Speaking at the International Television Festival in Edinburgh, producer Steven Moffat confirmed that a seven-episode series would be shown around Easter, followed by six episodes later in the year.

And he promised that there would be an "earth-shattering" cliffhanger midway through the two.
Moffat added that the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, and his sidekick Amy Pond - aka actress Karen Gillan - would face a "game-changing" moment in the new series.

Looking at the next series I thought what this show needs is a big event in the middle," he said. "I kept referring to a mid-season finale.

"So we are going to make it two series – seven episodes at Easter building to an earth-shattering climax, a cliffhanger we could never normally do because it would be too long before it came back. An enormous game-changing cliffhanger that will change everything."

It's fab isn't it ! I mean bear in mind Doctor Who is about a man travelling, ultimately alone , in a box through time and space , there isn't much game changing you can do to the basic premise but within that it's all very exciting indeed I can't wait !

You could change the box...hang on, it used to be able to do that (until the first story)...and did in Attack Of The Cybermen but you won't be watching that one.....besides I cannot assess the extent of the game-changing until I have assessed the results of the extent of the game-changing.

Is it actually a double-half dose or a same dose doubled yet roughly-halved to stop remainders?...oh, that's the same but it would be...although it might be different.

It's also a clever way of circumventing the perceived ratings slump of the summer months.

Was there one? When totted up with other BBC ways of watching it, record numbers on the iplayer?

....and the screening time in the first place (from 2005) was in a time spot where the BBC weren't expecting such high viewing figures....I don't know....I don't pay much attention to ratings except when I am paying much attention to ratings, including filthy jokes about ratings on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, which I haven't.

Please accept this pic of the Third Doctor, Man of Action (or was it Acton?) in gratitude of clarification.39623

I forgot how important it can be in journalism to leave out or play down the parts of the story that don't fit the argument.

In the 1960s, it was hardly ever off-air. Just for a few short weeks.

Patrick Troughton said in an interview for KTEH that the seasons became shortened because they couldn't stand to have Jon Pertwee (who he described as being "money for old rope") on all year long....In the same interview, he claimed to have never heard of Pertwee....I've no reason to disbelieve Patrick Troughton, especially when he was fibbing....

I'm wondering if there is any gay subtext in Gerry Anderson's U.F.O.
"I quite liked Kill Straker! for quite different reasons. It is full of double entendres and worked beautifully as a self-mockery of a latent homosexual attraction between Foster and Straker"
- Michael Billington (Paul Foster)

...Former Doctor Who script editor, Dennis Spooner, wrote for U.F.O. .....and in the extended 30 Years In The TARDIS documentary, Gerry Anderson (on the TARDIS set) complains that his youngest son preferred to watch Doctor Who instead of Gerry's own shows. Of course, the budget for two episodes of U.F.O. could have funded a year's worth of stories (40-44 episodes) for Patrick Troughton's Doctor.

Actually, the UFO episode, Exposed, featured Arthur Cox as Straker's "construction manager". Arthur was Mr Henderson, seen when Amy Pond trapped the Doctor's tie in his car. Arthur was also in The Dominators in a meatier role with Jamie but in a weaker story, The Dominators, which was released on DVD this year.

With you mentioning the gay subtext of Commander Straker and the gay subtext of Avon, it reminds me that I did sometimes think that at moments, there were similar vibes from those characters...you know the sort of anti-heroic sort of hero..... some of Straker's behaviour in Flight Path (the third episode of UFO filmed) and it's resolution and the way Straker uses Roper (George Cole).

But then again Avons delight in anything that caused Tarrant emotional pain was equally fascinating.

I have got it in my head that at some time in the series the David Tennants Doctor says that he has only one more 'life' left, thus making Matt whatsit the last one. But, and here's my dilemma. River Song, in her first appearance in the library with her book, indicates that they have been, shall we say, intimate, at some time in her past and his future. But if this is his last 'incarnation' that would mean that this relationship occurs with him, and somehow cannot see that happening, as there is no chemistry between them whatsoever.

Also now that he [U]has[U] met her and knows of this supposed relationship he would be more wary of her??

Oh?

at some time in the series the David Tennants Doctor says that he has only one more 'life' left
No.

thus making Matt whatsit the last one.
No...but even if the above no was a yes....it would be a not necessarily.

But, and here's my dilemma.
Trilemmas are far more exciting!

River Song, in her first appearance in the library with her book, indicates that they have been, shall we say, intimate, at some time in her past and his future.
Intimate? How do you mean?...although I follow the rest of that bit

But if this is his last 'incarnation'
We don't actually know that and even if it was his last one, it might not actually be his last one

that would mean that this relationship occurs with him
Wait and see...it might mean it but it doesn't necessarily mean it

and somehow cannot see that happening
Suggest later dinner...but then it happened in the future (or in past?), so you aren't able to see it yet.

there is no chemistry between them whatsoever.
Oh!

Also now that he [U]has[U] met her and knows of this supposed relationship he would be more wary of her??
Not necessarily

I'm not sure it qualifies as a dilemma at all....every time I hear dilemma, I think of the **x** Doctor's first full story, The Twin Dilemma...and I wish I didn't....

@ JR's piece At 62 have probably been watching the series for a d*** site longer than you have, so I can claim to be a big fan. One who has been sincerely disappointed in this last incarnation. The entire change of cast, writers and production team has in my 'humble opinion resulted in an almost amateur imitation of a once great programme. He seems to feel that his part only requires him to run around like a headless chicken gesticulating wildly and grimacing all the time, while she seem to think that pursing her lips and widening her eyes all the time constitutes 'acting'.

P.S. As you don't know my age, it is best not to use a "probably".

There isn't an entire change of writers. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have been writing for the tv show since the 2005 run and Gareth Roberts since the 2007 run....and all of those had contributed to Doctor Who in other formats.

Dunno what they think and feel. I can't guesstimate what is occurring within their thinking/feeling patterns....and how it influences their acting, only their acting (or part of their acting) but he was influenced by watching the Second Doctor ......

At 62 have probably been watching the series for a d*** site longer than you have, so I can claim to be a big fan.
After consideration, I would guesstimate that fan levels are largely dependent on the depth of immersion and bonding more than anything else. While seniority in age can determine + assist in levels of first-hand exposure and levels of media exposure at the time, often information doesn't come to light until later on....and then again, there is the "How big is big?" argument.

Why "amateur"? Why "once great"? When was it "great"? Please would you explain this further/in greater detail? Sharing your experiences in greater detail is most warmly welcomed.
