In the "Dynasty" forum, I had posted a thread discussing what "Dynasty" might have been like if Jack Lord had played Blake Carrington. What about in "The Colbys" spinoff? Do you think that Jack Lord could have played patriarch Jason Colby?

I remember that he acted in that play.
It's too bad that he didn't get to do the movie with Elizabeth Taylor. Those two would have set the place on fire.
One of the reviews of him in the play said that he tore the stage up as Brick.
I don't know why some people don't like him. Okay, so he wasn't an Oscar contender, but from everything I heard, he was a fairly nice guy, if a control freak on the set of 5-0.

I could have seen Richard Widmark as Jason Colby. Very similar style of actor - both equally good.

Neither had the star power of Charlton Heston. They wanted a star, not a has-been.

even I had not much symphatie for Charlton... I liked him as Jason and on "the planet of the apes"...
I would have prefered Jack Lord playing Phillip Colby

I'll give you that Heston was a big star, but I wouldnt call Lord a has-been. Hawaii Five-O lasted for longer than Dynasty and The Colbys combined, who knows how Lord's career would have gone if he hadn't stopped after Hawaii.

Let's see ... Charlton Heston was an Academy award winning actor. Even the most novice film-goer can name at least three of his films. His movies are iconic. Lord's claim to fame is a TV series. Huge difference. You guys believe what you want, but Heston was star power.

Jack, according to all of my sources, was suffering from early onset of Alzheimer's Disease, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, and simply wasn't able to take on any other role.
After working for twelve years on the same series, he finally decided that he'd had enough, and that it was time to retire.
Also, he'd shaved at least ten years off of his age so as to be able to compete with other young actors in Hollywood.
Since he was born in 1928 or thereabouts, that would have made him around 64 years of age, which is about the right time to retire gracefully.
