What? No Garth Brooks?

Me neither. Still don't get his appeal.... he's okay and all, but I don't understand why it got to the level it did with him (he's certified as the #1 solo artist in terms of album sales in the U.S. -- ahead of Elvis!).

Not a country guy, but at gunpoint I'll go with greatest hits collections of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings (the Dukes of Hazzard theme is arguably the greatest TV theme song of all time), Elvis, and, uh.... Lynyrd Skynyrd? Allman Brothers? Ray Charles?

Garth has his place in country; just not my personal cup of tea.

I prefer to classic country men, with the exception of a few.
Love Jim Reeves, Roger Miller, etc.

According to the numbers, everyone likes Garth (maybe not on this thread though).

I forgot Kenny Rogers! He was very good. "The Gambler" -- best ever song about poker.

It's interesting to note that nearly every one of Garth's albums has been released 3 or 4 times. The Wal-Marts here have tons of copies on the racks, being sold at half of the list price...

Which could be the reason for those inflated sales numbers in the U.S.

As far as I'm concerned, Garth's career jumped the shark with that "Kris Gaines" fiasco. What a travesty that was.

The Gambler is a great song!! It is about so much more than poker! It is a great metaphor for the cycle of life. Love this song.

Anybody listen to Trace Adkins (or maybe Atkins -- I think it's Atkins)? I don't, but having seen him on Celebrity Apprentice this year, he seems like a cool guy.

Ray&Donna
03-25-2008, 07:34 PM
Trace Adkins had some good-to-great songs but I haven't really liked anything from his last few albums. A good guy, though, in spite of his somewhat-checkered past.

Checkered pasts is the fuel of the country singer's engine, right? It gives them credibility.

In the good one's it does! In Country it is always good, if you're a man, to have a rough background, e.g., Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, George Jones... etc.,

Ray&Donna

True, true...many a singer has excelled by emphasizing their past.

Mr. Eugene

But if by checkered past, you mean a Michael Jackson-type checkered past.... then maybe not so much.

LOL, of course not. Alcoholism or a tragically-dead spouse, something you could write a song about. You can't write a (good) song about molestationlol

Cowboy you don't like any of Trace's newer stuff....what about I Got My Game On?? ;) Or his newest song, You're Gonna Miss This. That is a great song.

And yeah I guess the molestation thing wouldn't be good. Though don't you think Hammer came close with, Can't Touch This. :D:D:D

:D You know, ever since he did that "Badonkadonk" song I've been kinda lukewarm about him. "You're Gonna Miss This" is probably too sentimental for me--I didn't even think that was possible:o

I never thought about Hammer as delivering cautionary tales, but I think you're rightlol

Cowboy I'm shocked. I can't believe you're lukewarm about a song that touts booty. What's this world coming too

And too sentimental? It'll hit ya when your first baby is born and you start wonderin' how all the time went so fast.

To me Trace is sorta like Conway Twitty....he sings songs mostly aimed at women and he sings to the women. Conway once said, when I hear a song my first thought is 'will women like that?' and if he thought yes they would, he'd record it.

Trace is so damn fine though, he could record Mary Had a Little Lamb and I'd buy it. lol

Now don't age me any quicker than I'm aging myself:D

Interesting. Now, I do love about everything I've ever heard Conway sing.:)
