... the move from Manchester is a bit of a pity
- and the back-story for Sam a bit unsatisfactory,
but the mood/feel of Eighties was a nice reminder
- if a little more like 1984/85 - too New Romantic too soon
- 1981 was more ska and black & white fashion, no ?

Anyhow Glenister is CLASS, and about the only male character
allowed to be un-pc, and true-to-type - EastEnders take note.

Thursday night is now "Fire Up the Quattro" Night :D

Well they have to wear WHo shot JR t-shirts at some point if its 1981. I am hope they dedicate a dream type sequence to Dallas as they did with Zippy and Bungle.

They could really play on it like they did with Sam and the chalk girl. Such as T-shirts appear as I shot PC blah blah (dont know her name yet). She was shot, so it all ties in rather nicely.

If they dont mention it then its not very 1981 is it. :)

Oh it was 1980 wasnt it. Never mind then. :D

But Dallas was a huge thing at this point. It was very much engrained into the early to mid 80's so it would be odd for them not to refer to it.

Only Fools and Horses started this year.

Wasnt it just! OMG

It gave me goose bumps and I thought "oh dear here we go... Im hooked"

The way she accepted that wine form the great Gene Hunt, as if she had just succumbed to the fact that she was there... and there to stay a while... the way the music and acting made me think... here we go... this has only just started.

AA Gill for the Sunday Times gave it a right old roating. I usualy hang off of every word he says... but how can anyone say that Keeley Hawes "could not arrest an audience if she came on naked with a "this way up" sticker on hern bottom. Shes like a character thats excaped form a Depeche Mode video"

Well this lady had me spellbound and Gill can go do a running starjump.

I am absolutely loving Ashes to Ashes. I appreciate how regarded the preceeding series, Life on Mars was as a high-concept British drama, but something about it didn't grab me. Being a far bigger fan of 80s pop-culture in general, however, I was excited from the moment I saw the first publicity shot of Keeley Hawes with her huge flick-perm, blue eye-shadow and fur coat.

Every episode has been great so far. The backlash is highly unnecessary (and phenomenally predictable!) if you ask me, and seems to be either supremely nit-pickity or purely for the fact that it's not John Simms in 1974. I find it almost incomprehensible how Keeley Hawes has shouldered so much flack... she's really good! I can only assume some find her character's smug awareness irritating - and I concede it does grate a bit, her constant refrences to her own sub-concious - but it doesn't detract from proceedings that much, does it. Hell, it's the basic concept of the show! But she's thrown herself into the part with a gleeful abandon that you hardly see any more with leading ladies. I think she's fantastic, and every bit the actor Simm was as Sam Tyler.

I read a review on the web, I think on the Guardian website, that sited points such as in-accuracies in use of music (apparently the song Steve Strange sang in last weeks episode was released a number of months before the episode was set. If that ruined the story for any Guardian readers, then they really ought get out more...), or trends in style (such as the show featuring red brace wearing Thatcherite Yuppies five years too early, when Sloane Rangers were more common at the time) as short-comings in the shows credibility. I understand where they're coming from, but they're infuriatingly priggish people, aren't they! The show has the trump in it's corner (this is just Alex Drake's recollection of 1981, so may not be entirely accurate. it's a get-out-of-jail-free card for the critics to suck on), and anyway, if you ask me it's a "period drama", where the "drama" takes precedent over the "period". I love it, and i'll continue to love it. Fire up the Quattro!

Dont worry Bastard, and don't bother to make much sense as usual,
the wonderful "Life On Mars" is to be aired / being aired on US channels, as will "Ashes To Ashes"
... and there's talk of a US remake, you know the usual - different & worse. ;)

I just watched Episode Four. There's something greatly satisfying about Ashes to Ashes. It's a proper, high-concept, grown-up and ambitious drama that's well written and produced, and alongside Skins highlights just how good British television can be.

It was a less colourful episode than previous, oddly evocative of an 80s set Avengers story, with it's secret codes and underground government bunker, but great fun nonetheless. Gene's "how many women does it take to change a lightbulb" jibe had me in wickedly chauvinistic stitches. One thing that niggles ever-so-slightly and gives the critics ammo, is: if this whole scenario is openly acknowledged as Alex Drakes sub-conscious recollection of the early 80s, how do scenes not involving Drakes fit in? The good-cop/bad-cop routine between Carling and Skelton, for example. Sam Tyler was involved in practically every scene in Life on Mars, which added a watertight-ness to the storyline. It doesn't bother me too much, but it is a valid criticism.

Good point WalfordMafia - and I thought of this during "Life On Mars"
- where if you re-watch there ARE a lot more scenes than you'd think
where Sam isn't present - think we have to put it down to the in-limbo cops
having very active character-driven narrative imaginations :D

There are to be 2 further series - 3 in total,
then Phil Glennister wants it to end - and it will end
when Glennister wants, "no Phil, no show" producers have said.

Personally I'm surprised it will run longer than Life On Mars.

the tone is supposed to get darker - hope so, LOM was better due to the heavier tone.

Mayor Gregory

... however the rumour also exists that Glennister wants
to do just 1 more series and end it abruptly on a high,
not been too happy with series 1 and yes - wants it darker

Ashes to Ashes star Philip Glenister says he'll quit his role
as rogue detective Gene Hunt if the next series isn't up to scratch.

He said: "We had problems with the last run set in the 80s
as we tried to make it different from its 70s predecessor Life on Mars.

"So we'll need to iron out any mistakes for the six new episodes we'll be filming.

"I don't know how long it can go on for, though. If Gene starts to become a caricature, then I'll stop."

But Philip, 45, admitted: "The role of Gene has been a highlight of my career."

Been watching here in the States and its been really good.

It also has subtitles too, they didnt have the subtitles on the first episode but I guess they got request from the American Audience. It is difficult to understand what Gene is saying sometimes.

I like the scenes when she gets to confront her mum. Being able to tell her how she feels, as an adult and expressing the feelings she had as a child.

And the play between her and Gene is really good, the scene when they are locked up together and Gene tells the Good Lord he might fail. HA.

Great show and characters.
