I've just checked all the evidence and I had to post this immediately. It proves Bobby is a terrible businessman. Bear with me because it involves maths!

In season 3, J.R. reveals that the potential yield on Ewing 23 is $12million. Then when Cliff claims his 50% J.R. calculates it it half a million dollars a year. So Ewing 23 is actually producing $1 dollars per year, meaning there will be drilling on the field for 12 years to reach the $12million yield.

When Bobby takes over the company in season 4, he pays $6million to reopen the wells. This is revealed in the episode "Taste of Success". If Cliff takes 50% of the $12million over 12 years then Bobby will only ever make $6million on that field, which will break even after the original setup cost.

In summary all Bobby has actually done is invest $6million which it will take him 12 years to recoup, with no hope of even a dime profit, despite J.R.'s constant warnings to leave the field shut. So I ask who is the better businessman? No contest.

As a matter of fact, later on in the series the wells are blown up, and Bobby repairs them again with company funds. Therefore Ewing 23 will run at a deficit forever. Lucky for J.R. that he allows Bobby to take it for his alternative energy venture!
