View Full Version : Duran Duran
Never been a Duran fan back in the 80's, and when Wifey and I moved in together, she came with her Duran albums. I just had a 12" at the time, (The Reflex) which pleased her, but that was all I could offer. After rolling my eyes at her collection I said she would be better playing them when I was out.
Now then I've started to buy her the back catalogue (because I'm good like that;)) and I have to say I'm loving the first album, it took some doing but it's a good album:D
So then, any Duranies out there that wanna advise me on the next Album, I should start to listen to ? Did they go down the pan as the years went by, or did they improve ?

Now you're talkin my language Ome Wan! :D I was a "Duranie" back in the 80's!
They never released a bad album but I do prefer their earlier stuff. Became a fan after I first saw them performing Planet Earth on TOTP! :wiggle:

Dark in the city, night is a wire
Steam in the subway, earth is a fire
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
Woman you want me, give me a sign
And catch my breathing even closer behind
Do-do do do, do do do, do do do, do do do, do do
In touch with the ground
Im on the hunt Im after you
Smell like I sound, Im lost in a crowd
And Im hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line, in discord and rhyme
Im on the hunt Im after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

OK - talking my language now!!
First album is fab - I love
Careless Memories
Nightboat
Friends of Mine (Excellent)
Second album Rio also brilliant - save a prayer, hungry like the wolf, Rio
The Chauffeur
Seven and the Ragged Tiger also very good - bit different to the first 2 albums, but still great. This album reminds me of my first concert at Wembley December 1983.
They also did a live album called 'Arena'.
I do also like a lot of their later music (after departure of RT and AT), especially Ordinary World, Come Undone, Notorious etc
Their new album 'Red Carpet Massacre' is also well worth a listen to - again, quite different to their other stuff.
Great song named 'skin divers' and 'She's too much'.
If anyone is interested - VH1 22nd Dec are showing the London gig that I went to on Monday night - effing blinding!!
You did ask Omey:D

I'm not sure who's more "80s" than Duran Duran, and I dont know why the makers of BARBARELLA never sued.
The lyrics were routinely meaningless "riddles" and the music.... very 80s. In fact, if it weren't the '80s, they'd of all seemed gay. But it was. So they didn't.
But then neither did George Michael. Sort of.
I wasn't a fan of their songs (for the above reasons) except for "Save a Prayer" which I liked very much.
Duran Duran had some serious jams back in the day yo
a lot of their music has been in my personal top 10 for years..
early stuff particularly.
Planet Earth
Girls on Film (iTunes counter says this is my most frequently played song)
Hungry Like the Wolf
some of the best pop songs ever!
Post 1984- they got a tad lame for me..

I'm well old enough to remember that Duran Duran never had any "serious jams" even back in the day, unless they were selling jelly in the UK, and even then it never reached the States and therefore I can't attest to its quality.
The critics even in the 80s tended to snarkily dismiss the band as the era's equivalent of The Partridge Family (not even The Monkees, as they may have been too legit).
Not that I feel all that negatively about Duran Duran, as they wrote some things that sounded kinda dancey.
And I'm still convinced they were sending me messages through "The Reflex".(xmas3)

You can't go wrong with a copy of Duran Duran's Greatest Hits. "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Planet Earth" were early favourites, but I've also got a soft spot for their slower songs, "Save A Prayer", "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World". Their version of Public Enemy's "911 is a Joke" (from "Thank You", their album of covers) is unintentionally amusing. Simon Le Bon's only got one testicle, apparently.

MK was good in The Krays - but I am afraid that I only think of him as Steve Owen who bumped of Saskia with an ashtray rather than the bass player in SB........They were too slushy and goody two shoes......
I liked their earlier tunes, but when True appeared, that was it.......
Gold was great at the Rugby final Mr TH appeared in celebration

I bought two or three of their albums in 1983 but never listened to them passed 1984, unless it was to hear "Like a Prayer".
To me, their jaunty stuff just didn't age terribly well. Once I'd heard it a few times, that did it for me.
And LeBon dances like a goof.
Duran Duran were just on a flashback music show.. "Is there something i should know"..
Here in Aus we had "Count Down".. the premier music show of the late 70's -80's.. and all the international acts used to play on it.
It was back in the day when Simon was still thin and gorgeous, and didn't dance too much like a "goof".. it was just the fashion.

Thank you. Naturally, I meant "Save a Prayer".
On the other hand, I like "Like a Prayer" too. For a long time it was the only Madonna song I had any taste for at all.

And if you really read the thread (which you clearly have not), you'll see the first time I referred to the song, I named it properly. The second time I erred. Just a typo, honey.
Why would anyone falsely brag about buying Duran Duran albums? Isn't that the sort of thing that people generally lie to say they didn't do??
