As a child I remember watching the Who movies, why were these not part of the Who timeline ?

the are seen as "stand alone" features
- Peter Cushing doesn't "count" in the Doc Who regenerations

Yep, but how did they come about outside of it. The Americanised version movie was part of the sequence.

They were just produced in the 1960's as a "movie version"
- and Peter Cushing seen as a bigger star to appear in the movies
... bizarre when you think Roy Castle was in them !!

The first film was an adaptation of the first seven-part Dalek television adventure (1963-64) by Terry Nation and the second film was adapted from the second Dalek television story (1964). With the cast busy filming Doctor Who for approximately 39-44 weeks a year (with the occasional holiday), they wouldn't have been available anyway.

The 1996 movie was intended as the pilot for a new series of Doctor Who produced in America and a continuation of the previous show.

Castle and Cushing had recently worked together on the film, "Dr Terror's House of Horrors" for Amicus, another Milton Subotsky production
Those films were really cool :)

Yes, and a very young Bernard Cribbins was there too :)

I think a major reason they disregard the films as part of the "official" timeline is because they monkeyed with the back-story in the films. The Doctor in the films was just a human who happened to invent a time machine, if I'm not mistaken.

Those stories had been already done on television....not that that ever stopped Terry Nation....
