In an effort to stop the show's declining ratings, Days of our Lives is focusing on some of the show's most popular characters in its upcoming stories.

Joseph Mascolo (Stefano DiMera) has signed on to return to Days of our Lives next month. The news comes nearly six months after the actor nixed a return to the NBC soap because contract talks had reached an impasse.


When talks broke down last year, a show source indicated that the sticking point in the talks was the term of Mascolo's contract. Mascolo had wanted to return to work in a long-term storyline. Show execs, however, only wanted Mascolo to return for a short-term engagement. This time around the term of Mascolo's con1tract with Days of our Lives was not revealed. It is, however, known that the actor will be with the show through at least the summer.


Determined to tell a story with or without Mascolo, DAYS' scribes last year penned a story for Stefano but limited the character's on-screen exposure to shots that did not show the character's face.

After leaving Days of our Lives, Mascolo surprised many by joining the cast of CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful in August 2001. Last year, however, Mascolo and B&B reached a stalemate during contract talks and the actor opted to leave the show. Again Mascolo cited his lack of work as the reason for his departure.


"Joe has not been happy with the direction of his character and the lack of story [for Massimo]," a setside source told soapcentral.com at the time.


Mascolo returns to Days of our Lives on June 6th. He appeared previously appeared from 1982 to 1985, returned briefly in 1988 before making a permanent return in 1993 and exited the show in 2001.




It's shocking how lows DAYS' ratings are. Being below GL in the ratings is just unacceptable. Guiding Light has the excuse of having a horrid timeslot in many major cities, but Days of Our Lives has the regular timeslot of 1pm as far as I know. We'll see if Stefano can help them.

If he's going to return (again), they need to actually have him do something--preferably not involving brainwashing, kidnapping, fake murders--but something of substance. Like permanently killing off irritating characters. I could go for that:p

Yes, Hogan Sheffer (or whatever his name is) should make sure that Stefano's return is not wasted. I am definetely interested in giving DAYS OF OUR LIVES a try now that Stefano is returning. However, the headwriter has to make sure that his return is of substance, that he does something(s) evil, yet believable (yes, R&D, no brainwashing, lazer altercations, etc) and old favorites should definetely come back. Jack, Jennifer, Tony, Lexie and all who have been written out must return and the newbies should have less story. It just doesn't work if you do it this way. New characters, especially youngsters, should be at the backburner for quite some time, until the audience starts having familiarity with them. Slowly, they get more time and storylines. New characters should notbe given storylines immediately and be the reason core characters leave. If all this happens, with the right story, things might improve. It's weird, tho, how a man who was praised with making DAYS OF OUR LIVES much better is now the reason for making it boring, slow, stupid and repetitive.

In June, Apple introduced full, downloadable episodes of "Days of our Lives" to their iTunes product, per a deal inked with Sony Productions. According to Variety, episodes will be available for purchase to download at $1.99, but iTunes will also offer a multi-pass deal for 20 episodes at $9.99, cutting the cost per episode to 50¢. While there may be other perks in the future, including talk of bonus scenes, nothing more is official but the full episodes.

With the addition of iTunes avilability to the original broadcast on NBC and cable repeats on SOAPnet, "Days of our Lives" will be the most widely distributed daytime drama in the United States. Ironically, NBC had the first soap opera with a digital affiliation with "Passions", an affiliation the come to an end when it moves exclusively to DirecTV after ending on NBC.

While this is an obvious attempt at increasing the profit for "Days", it is likely that this is Sony's way at upping promotion for the show, one of the two daytime sudsers they're affiliated with. Ratings for "Days" as well as across the daytime genre have been declining for the past ten years. No doubt Jeff Zucker's near-guarantee of cancellation for "Days" in 2009 lit a fire under TPTB at Sony.

Days is better now than it's been in well over a decade. It's not perfect, but it is on the mend. I hope the ratings improve.

If the show ends up getting cancelled, I hope Soapnet will pick it up. I think a non-ABC affiliated show in first run production especially for the channel would work. If worse comes to worst, I hope Days goes out with a bang.

As for ratings, they were around a 1.9 in May, the lowest rating they ever have gotten, but since the DiMera's return, have gone back up to a 2.2 rating. Haven't increased from where they were, but got back what they lost.

To compare, "The Young and the Restless", the #1 soap, usually gets a 4.0 rating.

Just think, in the early 80s there were no soaps with ratings under 3.0 (side-note, I think that 1 ratings point then was 900,000 or something and now it's 1,100,000 .. don't quote those numbers lol)

I don't even watch the show on NBC. I catch it on Soapnet.

I was worried about the show, but I think it's making a recovery. Yeah, slowly. I believe, also, that if Passions can get its ass saved, so can Days.

Very true. The ratings for the 1st week in July fell to a new record low of a 1.7 rating, possibly because of this new story.

Too many new faces in a totally silly storyline.

Read there's a new boss at Days, he used to run "young and restless". The article didn't say much, but his goal was to see Days past it's 2009 contract, and did mention "the cast is large", which they think mean cast cuts are coming.

YOU'RE KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe that! All we have left from the old Y&R is one director, Sally McDonald! Of course this means great things for DAYS. One of the things that made Y&R so great for so many years was that they had put together a production team that was perfect. Actors, writers, directors, etc were all the best in the genre. I don't know if that casting director has been the same for years, but, if it is, he/she has been responsible for recasts like Jess Walton and Peter Bergman and that says a lot.

Poor Y&R.... Lost its brilliant actors, lost its brilliant producers, lost its brilliant directors (all people who have been with the show since the 80s and made it a 900+ week #1 soap). How bad can it get? Oh, wait, it already is.

The usual for Y&R used to be a 4.3 or more which makes what you're saying even worse! The fact that it has fallen so low sickens me, since Kay Alden was fired so that Latham could bring higher ratings--and she has never once done that.


This week, they went back up to a 4.1 though. Don't know why. From everything I've heard, it sounds like Y&R is not too good right now at all.

It went up for the reason it usually happens; LML pulled a stunt. This week, all of us who are fans are anxious over Phyllis's sentencing--which means that the longer it is the longer Phyllis will be out of the show. That's how it goes with LML. When Dru died, ratings were up for a week or two, then plummeted, when Nick was "dead", ratings went up for a week or two, then plummeted. That's what Y&R has become now: Event TV. Much like ABC.

It seems to me that summer vacations should enhance the viewership, since kids are home from school (notice, I said should).

What DAYS should do is get rid of all the Jeremy's, Stephanie's, Max's, Jet's and Chelsea's that the have and bring back Lexie, Jennifer, Jack and co. (sorry if someone of them is already back, I am a part-time viewer). Whenever I catch the show, I see 90% newbies (who most of them aren't really good) and 10% characters that I know and love. To me, that is the surest way to destroy a show.

John Black getting killed by a hit and run driver should give Marlena a much needed front burner story. But remember this is "Days" and even though they said he had massive internal injuries and his organs too badly damaged, the closed casket makes it possible for a future return. With Andre dying at the same time (roughly) they could always say they took his organs and put them in John. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Just read that the actor had been let go, after months of speculation.

The same thing happened in 2003 though, with all the "killings", but the characters all turned up alive. Still not sure if the actors who were killed knew this was the outcome, or if they thought they were actually fired.

Back to John, one story I can see playing out (if they ever decide to bring back John) is Stefano paid the doctors to give John a drug to make him appear dead, take the organs out of the deceased Andre, transfer them to John. Now John is alive somewhere and being retrained to be Stefano's pawn. Just a thought.

Can see an improvement in the show since the new executive producer took over, Edward Scott I think his name is, came from Young and the Restless.

John Black getting killed by a hit and run driver should give Marlena a much needed front burner story. But remember this is "Days" and even though they said he had massive internal injuries and his organs too badly damaged, the closed casket makes it possible for a future return. With Andre dying at the same time (roughly) they could always say they took his organs and put them in John. Guess we'll have to wait and see.


Not to hard to predict Days, but looks like I was right.

As for Days being cancelled next year, I hope not. Their ratings have gone up to around a 2.1, ranking 5 out of the 8 soaps on. Except for Y & R and the Bold and Beautiful, the rest of them are usually all bunched together around the 2.0 rating.

In an effort to stop the show's declining ratings, Days of our Lives is focusing on some of the show's most popular characters in its upcoming stories.

This is what should have been done BEFORE the show went into a free fall. I really like DAYS and will miss the characters, but too much damage has been done to this show because of JER's second return and writers after that for it to ever get back on track again.

WAY TOO MANY back-from-the-dead's, no focus on the Horton family anymore, and too much teen scene storylines, etc.

It is the "Brady" hour. I am SO sick of them.

I wanna see some REAL Horton's back on the show (even though she is no longer on the show, Jennifer is a Deveraux now, Julie NEVER was a Horton, but an Olsen, and Hope is a Williams Brady NOT a Horton), but that ain't happening. By 2009 (when DAYS' contract with NBC is to be renewed) I have no doubt that it will be canceled - and other than missing Marlena (Deidre Hall), I couldn't care less.

Regarding Alice Horton's children, only Addie is definitely dead. It was odd the tribute they did with the actor and actress that played Bill and Marie, but I believe that they are alive off-screen (Bill in Africa with Laura and Marie with Jessica somewhere).

Unfair comparison. "Passions" was picked up by DirecTV. SoapNet is one of cables biggest draws for the young female demo. PLUS, "Days" ALREADY airs on SoapNet.

Wow, think the last 2 weeks of Days has been REALLY boring.

Focusing on Bo's illness (we all know he isn't going to die) and every episode ending with Hope resting her head on his chest has gotten really old.

Looks like the transplant is about to happen, so it should get better. Also ready for Marlena to reverse Stefano's "coma" so she can get "her John" back (that's what I think will eventually happen).

Are you serious? 1) Days budget has been slashed immensely. 2) Soapnet has little or no original programing so they can afford it. 3) Soapnet seems to back Days. There have been several great Days specials. 4) It'd be better than that horrible GH spinoff. I think Days has a better chance with Soapnet than anyone else since FX had axed their plans for a daytime lineup. NBC seems to be getting out of soaps. ABC isn't going to cut one of theirs to make room for Days. And CBS has ATWT and GL to worry about; a sinking ship doesn't pick up extra weight.

I think that the best course of action would be for TPTB to reintroduce the TRUE Horton's and hope for the best. I mean, the "Brady" hour is proving to be fruitless in terms of viewers and storyline - what is the point.

The only Brady storyline that I would be interested in seeing is Caroline getting closer to Victor. That is about it.

Days needs to figure out what it can offer the next generation. I'm not talking Belle and Shawn. I'm talking Hortons.

Look at the original Horton children.

Tommy -- I would have preferred if a veteran had been cast as Tommy Horton. In the time he's been gone, he could have a wife and son along with Sandy who could also be married and have a son. SON is important, it carries the Horton name. But then, so does Tommy.

Addie -- dead.

Mickey -- I'm glad they're bringing Mickey back, but why?

Bill -- This is the most logical choice. Bring Bill back. He sets takes over the hospital. Mike comes back. That's 2 Horton doctors. Bring back Jeremy. He was hot and was starting to get interesting. There could be great conflict between these three men. Three different generations of Horton men. Now, there's also Laura. What if Laura isn't brought back at once, and Bill comforts lonely Maggie? Then Laura shows up ... or Mickey. And how does Bill interact with Lucas? Kate?

Marie -- Cheatham worked so well with Reid and Carey that she would have a great maternal feel to the series. She would be someone Hope or Nick could turn to. What if Marie were the new hospital administrator and Bill is the new chief of staff? What if brother and sister clashed?

It is like what happened with "Another World" - the Matthews' were completely wiped out and other families took their place yet the viewers were begging for the Matthews' to return. They never did.

That was Ava grabbing Hope. She's an ex of Patch (when he didn't know who he was) and she's out to get Patch's wife Kayla (who she has mistaken Hope for).

Doesn't make sense to me, she and her family must be in Salem, judging how fast she got to the hospital. She is locked up by her father, but managed to also be in Ireland when the Brady's were. :confused:

The past few weeks have been slow and boring to me and may actually tune out if it doesn't speed up and they bring Stefano out of his coma. Watch a little of General Hospital at nights on Soapnet and that seems much better, may have to go back to that one full time if Days doesn't get better.

I will miss Stefano. He was always my favorite character. I liked EJ better when he was more "Dimera" too.

John found the CD! I was so glad he said he would view it in private. I think and HOPE he will figure out what it is, then DESTROY it! John likes who he is now (so do I) and I don't think he would want to change. They are grooming Marlena to accept him like he is. I can finally tolerate watching them together, so please don't blow it!

I LOVED Tuesday's episode! The interaction between John and Sami was excellent, and flashbacks are always a plus. They even showed subsex! I thought after all the hate mail they got for that storyline that it was dead for good.

Best episode in weeks IMO. Even EJ and Nicole were good viewing. :)

It was a good episode, they only had the interaction between the two couples, which I liked.

Didn't see Days back with the "subsex", think that's when I went back to GH for a bit. Didn't start watching Days full time again until Sept of 2003, with the beginning of the Salem stalker story.

It turns out Chloe is actually innocent and Victor Kiriakis (Brady's grandfather) has him stashed away at a drug rehab center in Switzerland.
They thought Brady was kidnapped and Chloe was responsible. She did introduce him to some people who got him into drugs, which is why Victor blames Chloe for his problems. Brady and Chloe were/are also having marriage problems and he doesn't want anything to do with her.

What is with Theo's mohawk? No wonder the kid is having emotional problems! And didn't Ciara get big all of a sudden? I also think Allie is so cute, she looks just like Sami and could really be her daughter.

About EJ....

I kind of feel sorry for him. He finally has his night of love with Sami, and Lucas unravels it. Then EJ overhears Sami apologizing for it, saying how EJ means nothing to her, etc. Poor guy! I like Lucas but he did push Sami away, she couldn't stay away from that gorgeous EJ forever!

Monday's show was pretty good. I love that John demanded Hope reveal details about subsex, although we didn't hear them directly. The flashbacks were good, especially since they were HER memories! I am really liking John now, which is so strange because I hated him before. I hope they never change him back.

Max is not a really Brady – by blood that is. He and Frankie were adopted by the Bradys. Frankie is really François Von Leuschner, Dr. Carly Manning’s (Katerina Von Leuschner) brother. When he came to Salem under the alias Frankie Donner, he and Max were on the run from Max’s father, Trent Becker. Max was sent to summer camp and didn’t come back until a couple years ago.

Nicole Walker is the daughter of Paul Mendez and Faye Walker, and sister to Taylor and Brandon. It was Paul who forced Nicole into porn.

I'm so pleased to hear the news about Joe. I thought it was insane that they went to all the trouble to FINALLY bring hime back, after all those years we missed him, and then to leave him in a silly coma? Such a waste! I'm so glad to hear he's coming back. I do agree though, that the new John is more interesting than the character has been in YEARS. But the payoff will definitely be when he gets his memory back. This doesn't mean it'll have to end his new attitude. I do, think, though that he'll definitely treat Marlena differently.

Marlena and Stefano have been my favourites for years. What a joy to have them both back again. Throw in a good story for Maggie and I'll be the happiest Days fan there is.

Marlena was a little over the top with her reaction to the disk and lab destruction. She had no proof that the disk had anything to do with John at all.

Agree in a way, but ratings began to fall and have never recovered when they got rid of Austin, Carrie, etc and brought back Patch and Kayla, who hadn't been on in over 15 years.

I'm sure these folks were great in their time, but their time has passed (in my opinion). :)

Did read with the Olympics and some of the country not seeing "Days" for the next two weeks, they are only going to focus on the Stefano story and another with some kind of Nicole "fantasy". I think more folks are interested in the DiMera's than Max and Steph, but I guess if they showed them in France and Nicole's fantasy as their only 2 stories, no one would watch !!! :)

Yes! That episode was one of my favorites. I'd been waiting and waiting for Tony and Renee to get together. They thought they were siblings at one time, but Tony's mother revealed to him that they were not siblings while Renee was marrying another man, David--not the 70s one, but an 80s version played by Greg Marx. I think he was related to the Marx Brothers, but I digress. Tony rushed to the hospital to stop the wedding, but didn't get there in time.

The night of Renee's party, she and Tony made love. He left the room and his evil look-alike cousin Andre killed her. I am well-aware that this sounds ridiculous, but I have to say it made for good tv.

We didn't have spoilers then, so I was in shock. I loved Renee's character despite all the nasty trouble she caused. I was really hoping she and Tony would get a good story, but it wasn't meant to be. That party she threw before her death and the venom she spewed at everyone who attended ranks among my top three favorite Days scenes.
