View Full Version : The Campaign To Save GL (The Longest Running Daytime Serial)

There's a ton of animosity towards Guiding Light this decade, both online and in the "real" world. The print media are getting a ton of mail dissing GL and just about every story on. The ratings for GL aren't moving up, but remaining stagnant and sometimes decreasing. The phone lines at GL are busy most days with criticism. Even the CBS Daytime offices are getting in on the disappointment train with letters galore. So, why is everyone at the soap magazines, NBC, ABC and SoapNet trying desperately to save GL???

It’s a common belief that GL is on its last legs and that it will not be renewed this year when its contract with CBS/PGP is up. You can't really find an editor at any soap mag that thinks any different, nor can you find an executive at NBC or ABC Daytime that believes anything but that. Still, everyone that has anything to do with daytime soaps will tell you the same thing: We have to make sure GL survives!

Why?

I had the opportunity to speak with a leading magazine's editor this morning. Good conversation, but very honest (almost too honest for me). I asked her if she had any advice on how to reach Wheeler or Bloom about my feelings on the show. She bluntly told me, not asked, but told me, "Don't do that."

"If GL is cancelled, it will be the worst thing daytime soaps has ever experienced. We can't allow GL to be cancelled because that will signal to ABC and NBC that soaps are definitely a dying breed. I fully expect a soap on ABC to be cancelled if GL is axed. NBC will be sure to follow with both of their soaps when their contracts are up, given that Hogan Sheffer doesn't pull Days out of the spiral."

I had to keep pushing, "But GL is really bad right now. Isn't there any way to push my opinion?"

Her reply, "If viewers continue to voice their 'GL is terrible' routine, it will be cancelled. They don't care if viewers don't like the stories or the characters, but when we say we aren't watching, that strikes a very bad chord."

"You will see daytime heads protecting GL and really going to bat for GL from now until next year. I liken this to seeing Fidel Castro supporting George W. Bush in accepting Cuban refugees. It’s going to be strange seeing people support a show on a different network, but its going to happen."

So, there's an interesting twist on the situation. Darned if we do, darned if we don't.

Our obligation is not to the preservation of the genre. We owe no one anything. To the contrary, they owe US a product we want to watch. They can't muffle us, when our message is not to eliminate the product but IMPROVE it. All they have to do is read boards (which they do) to figure out what fans are asking for. Some things being: attention to history, continuity of personalities, and stories which take place on planet Earth, not the stratosphere. We acknowledge budgetary constraints, and therefore don't demand the elaborate sets, etc. of the past but COME ON.....Tiki Green hospitals, or everyone living in a hotel? We don't expect characters to remain stagnant and not grow, but COME ON....tearing up divorce papers one day and splitting up the next?

Nothing on this show shows that anyone cares, is doing their best, or is exerting any effort. The sloppiness shows. Yes, the shows have monetary constraints, but they certainly spend their money in what many of us consider to be a problem - poor acting, removal/dismissal of important characters/actors and inconsistent/badly written/executed. The lack of great content and concern is alarming!

If a network/production company doesn’t care about the show they’re airing, why should we care, and more importantly, watch? About 10 million people have tuned off the daytime serials and DON’T miss it. We’d rather not see something awful than watch for the sake of watching.

I think in some ways this is not a surprise - it's rather logical what would happen if GL were to be cancelled, particularly if CBS does not have another serial lined up (very unlikely) and isn't about to take B&B to an hour (somewhat unlikely). With GL gone, CBS affiliates would probably want that 3pm hour back (assuming they haven't already moved GL to 9/10am). If CBS gives its affiliates the hour back, and NBC is already airing 2 hours of programming, ABC will be urged to do the same, which would mean either canceling a serial or cutting two (most likely AMC and OLTL) to a half an hour.

It’s not just serials being a dying breed, though many of the choices of the last decade on all shows have moved them away from what made them great. The situation is also very much a product of unscripted shows (game, talk, reality) being competition and much cheaper to produce, as well as increased power at the affiliate level (the networks aren't the behemoths they once were).

As for other networks supporting GL (this has already happened), Brian Frons (all of people) has gushed about GL repeatedly. Hard-on, anyone?

If everyone at CBS, NBC, ABC, TV Guide, SOW, SOD and SID want to stick their heads up their bottoms and pretend that they can insult and ignore their customers with no consequences they are dead wrong. If I was on a 9 person baseball team (9 soaps) and one member of the team was streaking and shaking their nasty ass at home plate while I was trying to win a game/keep a job, I'd ask them what the hell they thought they were doing and I'd warn them how they'd never work again if they didn't cut the bullcrap out and if they said something stupid, I'd gag them with a baseball.

About time these awful shows were cancelled, maybe then the US will get a decent weekday seriel.

We like our soaps the way they are!

But if they ever do take them off , they are NOT going to be replaced with new soaps...look what they are doing with Passions time slot

I certainly hope that this will not happen. As Miss Texas said, they are not going to replace what they cancel. It is such a shame and I really don't like people wishing the end of something that millions of people still enjoy because they don't. :hello:

I seriously would not like to see the demise of the genre.

Oh Miss, you would rather have something well written in daytime no ?

If I were a TV exec I would commision a spin off show from a prime time show for daytime.

Lets see now, lets say ER, give ER a spin off, and put it in daytime. get some decent writers, obviously the production values will be less, but that doesnt mean it has to be crap with talking dolls and aliens and lots of glareing looks and embaressing drawn out scenes.

The concept has not changed since the 50's. Come on, its 2007.

I say get rid. In the Uk they dont work, and despite how crap some of our shows are, on the whole we have decent shows and these soaps just look plain awful. You need something new to set the bar for decent daytime writing.

(...)You need something new to set the bar for decent daytime writing.

Pam, I think you should look for recent Y&R episodes. The pacing is much quicker, reminiscent of the British soaps. :hello: Also, I'm sure you realize that your dislike for soaps (though understandable) is mainly because you grew up with a completely different way of presenting the same genre... maybe you're just not used to it. Of course, something tells me that you have this idea that all daytime shows are like PASSIONS--I hope not LoL!!! Although, I have to agree that those talk, talk scenes are sometimes too much, but Y&R and B&B, which I watch, have limited that.

I'm not trying to change your mind, of course, because it's just what you have grown to love and I respect that. Just rememeber this: 1) UK Soaps have audiences of what? 12, 14 million people an episode? US have 2 mil? 2 and a half mil? So that's bound to have an effect on budget and, consequently, production quality. And secondly, you have to realize that the format helps it be more consistent in terms of longelivity and pleasing the audience.

Anyway, I don't mean to sound as if I'm attacking you or anything but it is extremely unsettling to hear from someone whose opinion I cherish put all daytime shows in the same mold: "They're all terrible." Clearly you haven't seen how good Y&R is (or can be, anyways). Again, I think it's just a matter of what you have been used to. :D

Really, ok I will. But is it still about rich women, giving eachother dirty looks and fighting over their children ? If so I will give it a miss.

I would like to see a US soap about normal people.

The concept has not changed since the 50's. Come on, its 2007.

That is completely untrue. Several soaps, most notably Dark Shadows, Y&R and Ryan's Hope completely transformed the daytime format.

And I agree, cancelling GL for a cheap talk show is not good. American soaps are so bad now because they people in charge aren't trying. Soaps have been revived many times, a good current example is Y&R which is up almost a million viewers (with no promotion) since the new headwriter joined the show. If the network heads picked good Headwriters/Executive Producers and allowed them to produce a good show, soaps wouldn't be "dying." But with SOAPnet being the 2nd fastest growing cable network, I can't see how they're dying.

If you wanna see quality US soap, here is a link to some good classics. My recommendations:

As The World Turns: (from 1991) Margo must tell her mother that she let Casey die by turning off the respirator which meets with anger not only form Lyla but also from Duke and Casey's parents. Meanwhile, Kirk tells Ellie he loves her.

This episode is from the Douglas Marland period. He's considered one of the all-time best daytime Headwriters.

Young and the Restless, The: ( from 1975) Phillip hits Kay with some tough news, and someone is rushed to the hospital.

This isn't one of the best Y&R episodes, but classic episodes are rare. Bill Bell is another legendary soap writer and this is from the early years of Y&R.

Guiding Light, The : (from early 50s) Papa Bauer and daughter Berta discuss the newspaper. Kathy is accused of murder. Bill returns home having lost his job. Meta and Joe discuss the murder charge.

If you want to see how the woman who created soap did it, this 15 minute episode of Guiding Light is for you!

Guiding Light has been on its deathbed for years--I won't believe it's gone until I see CBS pull the plug.

I think a lot of people associate daytime soaps with gushy romance, mad scientists, and serial killers of DAYS OF OUR LIVES. But that's not an accurate depiction of all daytime US soaps.

Really, ok I will. But is it still about rich women, giving eachother dirty looks and fighting over their children ? If so I will give it a miss.

I would like to see a US soap about normal people.

I recently touched on that for a brief introduction to addressing social issues in daytime drama: "Daytime dramas are mainly known for over-the-top sexual escapades of privileged upper middle class characters in scenes of carefully-placed bed sheets to avoid the network of being sued for violating FCC regulations" -- I think ONE LIFE TO LIVE is probably your best bet for All-American characters, however they're losing their social change roots. This was discussed over on WoST during a SnarkCast and subsequently then in a OLTL Forum thread. This was right after fans became " unsatisfied with Natalie's grave-digging antics because she believes there was a body mix-up from an 18-car pile-up." The Vega family of OLTL has a crime-ridden history. However, now Carlotta runs a local diner in the area of town, Angel's Square, that was once a gang-hotbed, and her two sons, Antonio and Cristian, are detectives and struggling artists, respectively. However, it's who they are associated with that Wikipedia classifies them as "prominent" - Cristian is dating Evangeline Williamson, former defense attorney who now became assistant district attorney; Antonio is married to Jessica Buchanan, heiress to a newspaper and whose family owns Buchanan Enterprises, etc.

Other realistic characters are on OLTL: Marcie and Michael (we'll overlook the whole Al-died-and-was-resurrected-into-Michael-thing) who are adopted a baby (we'll overlook the whole the-baby-is-from-when-Margaret-raped-Todd-and-Spencer-hid-the-baby-thing) that they are raising while Michael is a full-time doctor and Marcie is a part-time teacher. So even the most realistic pairing has unordinary circumstances in their storyline. Oh, yeah, and Michael is said to have recently killed Spencer Truman...but we won't get into that right now.

Now despite it's lack of pure realism, it is a good show. The past couple weeks have been a bit bland in points. But you can regularly count on, as I have discovered recently, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.

I just love this show now. Before I couldn't get into it, didn't see what all the fuss was about, but once I sat down and watched a couple episodes, I really liked it! Now I'll even admit that it's better quality than ONE LIFE, which I've watched for the past ten years.

Y&R is a fusion of realistic and unrealistic.

REALISTIC
Colleen and Professor Korbel: Brad, Colleen's dad, doesn't want them to be together. Brad's wife, Victoria, can sympathize with Colleen because she had an overprotective father, Victor Newman. BUT, I guess Korbel might be Phillip who they all thought died in a car crash, but he's not really Jill's son even though she raised him...I don't know the full history on that.

UNREALISTIC
Pheila. Sheila is the most memorable wacko on daytime. I've seen lots of clips and episodes of her on Y&R, and some on BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, where Kimberlin Brown portrayed her. PSYCHO! And it's great. Currently on Y&R, she's had plastic surgery in Argentina and come back to Genoa City (hard to believe so much outlandish stuff happens in Wisconsin!) looking exactly like Phyllis, how is friends with Lauren, who has a little baby named Fen. Sheila's obsessed with Lauren. She's tried to kill her numerous times. So now she wants baby Fen for her own. So by looking exactly like Phyllis, she kidnapped Phyllis and her baby Summer, and then pretended to be Phyllis whenever she was around Lauren. There's a twist coming in this storyline, I think, but I won't spoil it. Pretty unrealistic. But highly entertaining!

So there are realistic characters on these soaps, but intertwined with unrealistic ones and soaked in unrealistic storylines.

I won't even talk about GUIDING LIGHT except the fact that the acting sucks (currently Lizzie is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen, no lie!), the sets suck, the opening credits visually remind me of a teeth whitening commercial, and it's simply boooooring!

Can't judge AS THE WORLD TURNS. Never been able to force myself to watch a full episode. Their world turns too slow for me.

Never watched a full episode of PASSIONS...I remember one summer as I would watch OLTL and it was on commercials, I'd flip through the channels, and every day pregnant Sheridan was in some basement dungeon...this went on for months! Everytime I flipped to NBC at 2pm: there was Sheridan crying into dirt. And I think the lady who was keeping her there had a pet orangutang. Bizarre. UNREALISTIC -- but not even entertaining!

Never been a fan of DAYS OF OUR LIVES. I like some classic episodes, but the whole "look" of DAYS just doesn't do it for me.

ALL MY CHILDREN is definitely a show I find interesting. But I hate the film they use, so I can't watch because it bothers me too much. All the sexual identity storylines they have are fascinating: transgender Zarf, lesbian Bianca .. it's all new and intriguing.

I must say, I've never watched a full episode of GENERAL HOSPITAL either. Not even enough to say what I don't like about it. It's never grabbed my attention. MsTexas73 is a GH expert, and shown me some great Monica and Alan clips - but that's the extent of my viewing.

I think soaps need new blood: not more undeveloped new characters or even complex ones, but producers and networks that will let their writers do what they want to do. Some much a good story is dictated and altered by the producers who clearly don't know their audiences because over the past few decades they've lost the majority of their viewers. Can you imagine 2.5 million viewers getting you the 3rd highest ranked soap during the 1980s? There's obviously something wrong: and management seems to be to blame. Let the writers write and the actors act, and we'll have quality soaps each day.
