'Desperate Housewives' Tops Week's Ratings

POSTED: 1:18 pm PST November 29, 2005

The demise of creepy pharmacist George on Sunday lifted ABC's "Desperate Housewives" to the top of the weekly Nielsen Media Research rankings.

CBS continued its overall dominance during Thanksgiving week, winning in the ratings as it has every week since the season started.

But "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was knocked from its usual perch atop the ratings, perhaps because it was telecast on Thanksgiving and some of its regular viewers couldn't stomach a forensics tale after a full meal.

An estimated 25.9 million viewers watched "Desperate Housewives," where George continued trying to manipulate Bree to the very end. Surging "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC was the week's third most popular show.

CBS drew strong numbers for the first of many holiday-themed programs, the TV movie "Silver Bells."

CBS averaged 14.3 million viewers for the week (8.9 rating, 15 share). ABC had 11.4 million (7.1, 12), but won among the 18-to-49-year-old demographic watched closely by advertisers. NBC had 9.2 million viewers (5.8, 10), Fox had 9 million (5.5, 9) UPN had 3.3 million (2.2, 4), the WB had 3.3 million (2.2, 3) and Pax TV had 610,000 (0.4, 1).

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 11 million viewers (7.5, 14). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 9.3 million viewers (6.4, 12) and the "CBS Evening News" had 8.2 million (5.6, 11).

A ratings point represents 1,102,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 110.2 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Nov. 21-27, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "Desperate Housewives," ABC, 25.9 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 25.7 million; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC, 19.6 million; "Survivor: Guatemala," CBS, 19.5 million; "Without a Trace," CBS, 19.5 million; "Cold Case," CBS, 19.4 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 19.4 million; "Lost," ABC, 19.3 million; "Law & Order: SVU," NBC, 17.1 million; "NCIS," CBS, 16.4 million.
