View Full Version : My Grandma

My grandma passed away Sunday night at 11:00 Central time. She was 94 years old. In a way she was the 20th Century.
She was 1 when the Titanic sunk.
She was 7 when they signed the Armistice.
She was 18 when the stock market crashed.
She was 30 when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
She was 50 when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record.
She was 70 when Reagan was shot.
And she was 90 when three planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
She was a Christian lady too. Always said a prayer before she went to bed at night.
She was also a homemaker, raising her son (my dad) and her two daughters.
Grandma also had a lot of tragedy, she lost four grandchildren, my Grandpa, her favorite nephew and was estranged from her two daughers.
I admit I was not that close to her when I was younger. At times I disliked her at times because she tended to play favorites with her grandkids. She liked boys more than girls. But we got along better when I was an adult.
Due to nasty weather here in Minny, I probably won't make it to the funeral. My mom said to me tonight. "If she was here she would be worrying about you getting home, and your dad and I will worry about you, so stay put." I feel bad about not being there but I guess I can go home for Thanksgiving, right?
Putting my thoughts down tonight made me feel a lot better.

Sorry about grandmother. I'll bet she was interesting to talk to, given the fact so many historical milestones occured during her lifetime. I know you will cherish her memory.:)

Hopefully her ripe old age is a sign of the longevity in your family!
My grandfather was 103 when he died. It's amazing to think of how much a person who lives a full like that sees in his or her lifetime.

I loved the way you did a timeline of your grandmothers life! That was beautiful. It doesnt matter the age of your loved one when they die because it still hurts and is still very painful but there is a touch of ( this is a bad time to not be able to think of the word I'm looking for but I can't think of it)to know she lived such a long fullfilled life.

I'm sorry for you and your family's loss. I envy people who had so many years with their grandparents alive. It's always sad to lose family members though, no matter what age they were.

My Grandmother was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1897. She came over here when she was six years old. She passed away when I was 16 and I was utterly devastated. I know there are no words that will lessen the grief you must feel at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Much Love,
Yellow Rose

I had my Grandma until 1999. 30 years of my life on earth with her.
My other grandparents died when I was young.
I still love and miss her. Grandma is the type of memory that will never go away!!.
You sometimes think they are actually going to outlive you!!
What other woman is going to call you a good boy when you are a man??

There's so much truth to what you just said, McG. My Mamaw was a month shy of 90 when she passed...was tough as nails and many times, the hubby and I joked that she'd outlive us all. As I was reading this thread, I couldn't help thinking of Tom Brokaw's book...they truly are the greatest generation, aren't they....:)
