No, he travels back in time and allows himself to be killed by plane part so the girl he loves will not be killed by events later when he does not die so he saves her life by killing himself. It's a weird movie, I think it is over-rated, some people think it's brilliant, I don't- it's just so different people confuse it with brilliance.

The Dreams In Which I'm Dying Are The Best I've Ever Had.

Truly a mind bender of a movie - part psychological thriller, part science-fiction mystery, and part coming of age drama. I really enjoyed it. The intriguing plot a side the most impressive thing about this movie has to be the array of interesting characters played by a strong cast. Jake Gyllenhaal is simply mesmerizing as Donnie Darko. Excellent movie.

This was a better than average movie, but it was so hyped that it ended up feeling like a disappointment when I finally watched it.

I have no problems with a good mind bender, as long as I can figure out myself what it was all about. My anticipation was high because it was recommended by a co-worker of mine so when it didn't turn out all that fantastic my first reaction was "rubbish!"
Yes, I know it's not fair to regard something as rubbish just because I'm not intelligent enough to understand.
But I can't escape the feeling that some people are looking too much into this - I've read several concusions on the IMDB and I don't think any of these have been confirmed by the writer/director...

So after some extensive pondering I think I'll stick with my first impression of the dvd cover ("hmm, probably something like ALICE IN WONDERLAND meets AMERICAN BEAUTY")
I mean, why not go for the obvious?
A lot of dreamy scenes thrown together, apparently with no connection whatsoever - the other characters, almost as weird as the Caterpillar, Mad Hatter and the Queen Of Hearts. Maybe Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" would have been a more suitable soundtrack?
