The popularity of the glossy prime time soaps was not limited to America and England.
In Holland we've had several tv series about rich families although they were never as glamorous as the Carringtons of course.
1. Westenwind
2. De Fabriek (The Factory)
3. Diamant (Diamond)
4. Spijkerhoek
And the Germans had:
1. Die Schwarzwald Klinik
2. Das Erbe der Guldenburgs
Now I'm trying to remember the title of a French (!) prime time soap, it was something about a woman who returns to her birthplace to fight her father in local politics...? Does anyone remember?
And the Germans had:
1. Die Schwarzwald Klinik
Please forgive me as my German is very rusty, but does this translate as BLACK FOREST CLINIC? If so, it aired in the afternoons on Channel 4 here in the U.K. in the mid-80's.

Would this be CHATEAUVALLON by any chance? This was a French soap that also was shown, late at night, on Channel 4 circa 1986. As I recall, it was shown twice in the week in both dubbed and subtitled versions. I think it was about a family who owned an influential newspaper.

Yes, the Black Forest Clinic, it was very much in Hotel/Love Boat style.
And you're right about the French soap series, it must have been Chateauvallon!!
Thanks for that

Here in Portugal, we have loads of Brazillian ones, yet the Portuguese one's are also very popular (Daytime Soaps that air everyday after the news).
Strawberry's with Sugar ( Sorth of BH 90210, Daytime version with Surf), New Wave (Brazillian) etc...However they can't top the american one's in terms of ratings.
American Nigthtime Soaps Ratings(in Portugal)
1. Dallas
2. Dynasty
3. BH 90210
4. Falcon Crest
5. Melrose Place
6. The Colbys
7. Models Inc.
8. Knots Landing

I'm sure every country has its own daytime soap...my mother used to watch "Oshin", a Chinese soap that was broadcasted on Belgium television lol.
But that's not the same as the weekly big budget/high fashion prime (or night) time series.
Can you imagine a Russian version of Dynasty?
Can you imagine a Russian version of Dynasty?
No. But I can imagine a show called Gilligan's Gulag.
And you're right about the French soap series, it must have been Chateauvallon!!
Apparently CHATEAUVALLON was a huge success in France but was axed after one season because the lead actress was seriously injured in a car crash.

Yes I've read all about that right after you had posted the title of this series.
Chantal Nobel is her name...very sad indeed.
There are still some vhs tapes available from amazon.fr.
It wasn't that great actually, but it was good enough for a PT soap addict like me!

The VHS cover features Chantal Nobel as "Florence Berg".

Verbotene Liebe, great show. I don't follow this show anymore, because i have no time. Because it's on when i'm eating, not a happy time to airing a show with dinner time.

-yes. but "Lindenstraße" is no daily soap. It´s shown every sunday...
"Das Erbe der Guldenburgs" was really well done. The newspapers called it "the german answer to Denver (Dynasty)". 2 rich families fighting: the wealthy Guldenburgs and the much more richer Balbecks. they produce beer and fight in buisness. Margot Balbeck (an Alexis-type) wants to destroy the Guldenburgs and wants to own their castle...
"Verboten Liebe" is for me the best german daily-soap. It has a really good bitchy, sexy woman - a sort of Amanda Woodward # she even kills people to get what she wants...
"Schwarzwaldklinik" was the first german hospital-show and is still the succesfullst show ever. It reached nearly 80% in the ratings in the mid 80s

And "Das Traumshiff" also with Sasha Hehn ;) hmmm
In Germany they have copied almost everything, like "Wetten Das" and "Traumhochzeit" :D
I really liked the Guldenburgs and would certainly buy the dvd's.

Well, here in Greece, we have quite a lot of Daytime Soaps, which air in late afternoon, alongside US, Mexican and generally Latin American ones.
The Greek Shows are:
1. I Lampsi ("The Glow", VERY popular one, ran for 14 years, ended a few weeks ago when the next soap came out):
2. Vera Sto Dexi (Engagement Ring) VERY, VERY, VERY succesful and it's format actually reminds of a Weekly Show. It's VERY quickly paced and high-quality. Started September 2004.
3. Kalimera Zoi (Life, Goodmorning, has been on for 12 years, from the creator and writer of "The Glow")
4. Apagorevmemi Agapi (Forbidden Love, about a girl who unknowingly falls in love with her brother) On since 09/1998
5. Filodoxires (Ambitions) Really trashy one, was good on Seasons 1 and 2, completely ridiculous on Season 3, but still going on for a 4th Season
6. Kato Aptin Acropoli ("Under The Acropolis") It was kind of a soap-sitcom, funny, ran for like three or four seasons.
And, lastly, there's:
7. Ta Ftera Tou Erota ("Wings Of Love") Good, but average-rated, ended after 7 years.
US ones:
The Young and the Restless (has been Braodcast since 1991 here)
The Bold and the Beatuful (Has been Braodcast since 1988, which is a year after it's US premiere!)
Days of Our Lives (For a couple of years, recently stoped, don't know if it'll be picked up again)
Guiding Light (Shortly)
Latin American Soap Operas:
COUNTLESS (of course, I HAVE to mention such successes as "Maria La Del Barrio", "Marimar", "Rosalinda", "La Usurpadora", "Esmeralda", "Prisionera", "Mariana De La Noche", "Kachorra", "Milagros", "Top Models" etc. (ALL dubbed!!!))
So, that's it. Hope I didn't bore you! :)

strange isnt it... all these European countries buy into
American big budget, slick soaps and ignore
the soaps from other european countries
somehow I cant see Germany or France airing Coronation Street
.... its just not glitzy enough !

Not to forget:
- Ein Schloss am Wörthersee
- Diese Drombuschs
- Hotel Paradies
- Klinik unter Palmen
- Unter uns
- Sturm der Liebe
- Wege zum Glück
- In aller Freundschaft
I used to watch "Sturm der Liebe" at the beginning but now it´s just getting more and more crapy from day to day.

And what about "Rivalen Der Renbahn"?
Was that prime time soap? Glossy drama with cliffhangers and all that?
