I think after the 1996 finale it should have ended. Steve's birthday was good to end it there. I think Andrea came back for the episode, right?

Brenda was gone, the Walshes would soon be leaving, Andrea was gone, and the show was moving on. I think once Brenda left it started goinf downhill, because she was an important character. Then all of the Walshes were gone before the final season. 1996 should have been the end as the show added too many new male characters and a few new female ones to romance the remainin cast members. David had so many new lovers. (Aside from Claire) he had that array of list that were mostly guest-starts for several episodes and were nothing compared to Donna.
