View Full Version : Dallas is so boring

I tried watching that show a couple of times. But it's so boring. I only love the who shot JR story, other than that, the show is so repetitive. J.R is always hurting someone's life and is obsessed with petrolum. Cote Ouest was much more creative and interesting. Dallas is a big bore.

Then why bother hanging out and posting on a Dallas forum?

It's my official first day here, I just thought I could comment my opinions on Dallas. You right maybe it wasn't wise for me to do it here. Sorry.

I loved both shows, and I think what you're saying is just a generalization. On Knots Landing, Val could be described as being constantly nutty, Karen and Mack as being happy and thus boring, and Abby as always being involved in some shady business plot.
However, obviously there was more to it than that. I believe there can be continuing themes, as long as the writing and acting is good enough to pull it off. Would you have expected J.R. to simply stop messing with people's lives? That would have been boring to me, like when he became all bark and no bite beginning about season 10.

I don't think Dallas is a boring show, but now that it's like season 10 I have been getting bored. The last three episodes I didn't even bother with. Everything is so confusing and nothing is really wowing me. But overall I think Dallas was far from boring, espcially in those early years.

I don't think Dallas is boring it is far from it. I guess everyone has their own opinion but it surprises me that anyone would think it is boring. LOL....

Hey Cote Quest I find your opinion interesting and valuable. Even if I don't agree with it. Makes for a more interesting discussion.

I find Dallas far from boring...that is until now...I'll continue to watch through season 11 but I don't know if I'll make it through the last two seasons. It drifted too far from the original show then.

I think the plots in the episodes they're showing now are boring with Clayton's friendship with Laurel and J.R. pressuring April in business. There's definitely something missing without Pam.

I was watching my dvd today...the one where Sue Ellen first meets Dusty. I like him then. They could have been very interesting if the producers hadn't dumbed down his character later.

I belive that every opinion here is ok.
If some people don't like Dallas is not a problem, it is interesting however to know other different opinions.
So, Cote Ouest don't worry, write again on this forum!!

It's not like Knots was never repetitive. I am sure it was great show, but as I read summaries, I saw the same plot again and again – some minor shady person comes in town, gets killed, one of main characters suspected, but they are innocent, some minor baddie probably involved with Abby did it. Such a small cul-de-sack, so many many many many murders. Oh, and psychos. At least, on Dallas it was The JR who moved the plot along mostly, and the feud, but it looks like on Knots (despite having great character like Abby), they always needed random psychos to turn the heat on.
Laura's the one with real character development, Val never really grew a backbone, only get wackier and wackier. Karen's always everywoman, Abby's bad, etc.
I mean, let's face it, it were two great soaps but none were Sopranos or The Wire. Sillyness was part of appeal I guess, at least for me. Both shows had great parts and stupid ones.
I agree though - it's okay to state your opinion. I'd hate for this board to turn all fangirlish.

Let's not forget that the Dallas and the Knots site are connected, so it is not stupid to say you find Dallas boring if you are a Knots fan and happened to stumble over this place after posting on the KL board.
I remember when I saw Dallas for the first time I loved it and didn't find it boring at all. I am however finding the show a bit dull in re-runs. I tune in every once in a while but only for sentimental reasons.
I can however watch Knots again and again but with Dallas it's different. Loved it the first time round but I can't really watch it again without falling asleep, lol.

I don't know how anyone can say this tenth season of Dallas is boring. For me, this is the best the show has been in a long time. It just proves how good the show could still be even with Victoria Principal gone. The characters of Sue Ellen, J.R., and Bobby were focused on and I think it was great! I can't wait for 3 o'clock to roll around each weekday.

I don't know but after watching a couple episodes of Dallas, you pretty much get what the recurring themes will be about, Cain Vs Abel, a rich family scheming to hold on to their petrolum reserves and a nasty guy who treats everyone around him like crap. These are pretty much the ongoing themes of the show.
On the other hand, Cote Ouest was always full of fresh characters and storylines and not until season 9 or so, there wasn't this sense of repitition.
I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, It's just the impression I was left with watching the show. Both Dallas and Dynasty never seemed to appeal to me because they were so predictable. Who knows maybe another factor could be that where I grew up children weren't allowed to watch Dallas and Dynasty and were sent to be early. Cote Ouest was the show to be watched by and made for teens and pre-teens.
Today, it's seems so illogical.

I liked Nicholas and Sue Ellen's relationship,
April becoming a better woman and Cliff's partnership with Dandy unfortunately brief, and
I loved Bobby and J.R.'s fight in the pool, sure
season 10 has some bright spots and season 11 is
half-way decent but Victoria's departure left a
big hole in Dallas. The ratings decline badly after she left and only got worse with Linda's departure.

I should add how HORRIBLE I thought seasons 12
and 13 were. I have to admit Dallas did become a
big bore by then.

Re Cote Ouest's comment: "I only love the who shot JR story, other than that, the show is so repetitive." I think a lot of original viewers felt that way. I remember Julie Burchill complaining in the NME during Season 3 that it now took JR three episodes to even break wind.
Re= Sid's comment: "I believe there can be continuing themes, as long as the writing and acting is good enough to pull it off." I agree. In fact, the repetition was one of the things I liked most about DALLAS! That's why I loathed Season 8. It betrayed what the show was all about. I was so happy to see Pam once again moaning in Season 9 about being caught between the Barneses and the Ewings. However, I remember my flatmate at the time complaining that "DALLAS is always the same!"
Re Jessie's comment: "it surprises me that anyone would think it is boring." Well, DALLAS definitely dragged periodically, far more than KNOTS LANDING ever did. Even Larry Hagman described it as "sometimes turgid."
re franck.beaumont's comment: "It is so stupid to watch a show that is boring you... so stupid to try again... and so stupid to express oneself on the web page of this show...conclusion : your are s....... ( guess )" Oh Franck, you sound like you're nine! I never understand why people on this forum take exception to other people daring to criticise DALLAS. After all, there must be hundreds and hundreds - if not thousands - of posts on this forum complaining over and over about "where DALLAS went wrong". People seem more interested in dwelling on the dream explanation and Pam's exit than talking about how brilliant Season 2 was, for instance.
Re Wendell's comment: "It's not like Knots was never repetitive. I am sure it was great show, but as I read summaries, I saw the same plot again and again." I always enjoy reading your posts, Wendell, but I think there is only so much you can glean from reading episode summaries. I'm sure on paper DALLAS, KNOTS, FALCON CREST and DYNASTY would be indistinguishable. It is how these same ideas are executed that makes all the difference. KNOTS adopted many of the traditional soap conventions, but also subverted them in a hundred different ways. It evolved far more than DALLAS did, (truly, OUEST was a COTE of may colours!) but that was the nature of KNOTS, whereas the nature of DALLAS was to return to the same themes again and again.
"it were two great soaps but none were Sopranos or The Wire." I was just reading a review of THE WIRE on the way home tonight. That's a show I defintely want to see! It hasn't made it over here yet.
Re Cote Ouset's comment: "Cote Ouest was the show to be watched by and made for teens and pre-teens." You think? I can't imagine Richard Avery or Greg Sumner appealing much to kids!
Re Beth's comment: "I liked ... April becoming a better woman" Oh I hated watching April become a stupider, needier, whinier woman. I loved her in Season 9, but she became such a pain by the end, her death was a merciful release.
"I should add how HORRIBLE I thought seasons 12 and 13 were. I have to admit Dallas did become a big bore by then." Nooo, the first half of Season 12 is wonderful, and most of Season 13 is a blast!

Personally, I don't like it when show is driven by new, interesting characters. If original ones ran their course, and so did original themes, why not to just start the new show? It's different show anyway. I liked continuity of Dallas, for me it was testament that premise was interesting enough and originals were deep enough to be examined for years. I started watching show about Ewings, and I wanted show about Ewings, if I wanted a show about someone else, I would watch something else!
Saying that, of course many things could be done better, those themes could be explored a bit better, but I think there was still enough material in it for years to come, if only writers didn't lose interest at some point.
And surely I don't feel like killing anyone, let alone dear Christine. Not only tastes differ, but Dallas is more than open to criticism, it could be great and could be silly soap opera, just like all nighttime 80s programming.
Of course one of things that sustained my interest was my rooting for JR. I was always rooting for him to get another babe or stick it to his sanctimonious family. He did and said all those things that I wanted to do but never had guts to. Watching him in danger was cool too because I am a sadist.
Gosh, James, it didn't "made it' over here also, but I still named this one because ALL critics whom I read wrote that this show was smartest and best show on HBO and therefore on American TV, and viewers who have enough brains to understand it can't praise it enough. I think it was made for analyzing mind like yours. From my understanding, Wire requires much attention in order to remember all ongoing plots and deeper meanings. H:LOTS was great show which I loved, and since The Wire has a lot in common with it, only braver and smarter, I am sure I 'd love it if only from pure snobbery. *Sigh* I hope Russian TV will wise up and show Wire instead of another rerun of SATC.

I agree with him...I could find Dallas boring...I did when it first was aired.
I like it NOW...did not like it when I was young and had better stuff to do on Fri. than sit with the old folks and watch JR.

I can see where Dallas may be boring to some folks...
They're people with lives already and exactly LIKE the Ewings and the Barnes!!
I DO believe that somewhere in this world there exists a real JOCK, a real Miss Ellie
and a real J.R. living together - -
...they just haven't exposed themselves!!
Plus many see Dallas as a TV soap 'OP-ER-A'....(pleeeze!)
"You can't please everyone, so ya - got ta please yourself" sings Rick Nelson...
I posted this before so I'll say it again:
It's those prolonged running shows that for years get
the storylines too boring for the already BORED viewing public!

I never heard of Cote Ouest. Dallas has always been very captivating. I look upon it as a great novel where you can not wait till the next chapter. But the main focus of interest for me was JR Ewing and although he gets less shocking as you go further you can't judge an entire series just because it becomes repetitive.
In America they milk everything but in Britain classic quality shows have few episodes and are considered genius because of that e.g. Fawlty Towers and Father Ted. Would you consider Fawlty Towers boring if they decided to make 200 episodes instead of just 12.
